The upside to higher gas prices

A comment I read in a local forum was "Gas is so expensive, I had to give up smoking so I could afford to drive!"

I continue to believe that our oil dependence is the biggest threat to our national security. While I wish the increase was a bit slower, I think ultimately that it is the best thing to happen for our economic future. I hate to say it though...the current high prices are going to cause some really short term pain.

...and you're right, it may curb rising health care costs as well.
