I did it once, just to see what it felt like... it was NOT in a race and it was on a very straight stretch of road with new paving and no cross streets (and no traffic!), so I never felt particularly endangered. It does feel pretty unstable to be down like that. I wouldn't want to do it anywhere even slightly sketchy.
