Lloyd is a perfect name for that dog! I like Lloyd!
Kermit, "working" dogs are amazing to watch in action
While waiting for our flight in Auckland, we watched two officers & some type of drug or ?? dog sniff & sniff round.
The cutest ones are the biosecurity beagles at the NZ & Aust airports . They sniff out the banana in backpack yesterday smell in a zip!
So many doggieeeeeesss..I want them all :o
crazycanuck-down here Customs has the "beagle brigade". Thay actually "touch" the bag when they alert by putting a paw on it. Super cute.
First, TULIP: Please apologize to Shilo for me for the "her" comment!:o I mean, OBVIOUSLY he's a he! HE is so HANDSOME!!!!
STIGER: Congrats on your new girl! And wonderful for adopting! She looks like she'll be a fabulous addition to the home -- does she love children? How old is she?
KERMIT: Wow -- your girl is very gorgeous. And she looks all business, too! Those ears are awesome.
WINDING: Yep --- Peanut definitely looks evil in that photo! Like she's daring you to say anything... just one thing.. about what she just did! You gotta love the cats!
LLOYD is fabulous! I have a client that has three bulldogs. They just brought their newest girl in the other day and we were all so thrilled to meet her. They are such characters -- very different from any other dog, that is for sure! :p
Not much other than she's been moved around a lot before we adopted her. The Oregon Humane Society didn't have a lot of information to give me. They received her from another shelter and was told she was with a foster family for awhile. There's evidence that she's had puppies pretty recently; that may be why she was being fostered.
She's pretty needy right now and wants constant reassurance. Yesterday was the first day that she felt confident enough to go eat on her own. Before that she'd take only two or three nibbles of her food while constantly looking up to make sure we weren't going anywhere. She follows basic commands very well and is fine being handled. She does so-so on leash but that may be due to the excitement of a new environment after shelter life. She's picking things up pretty quickly though and enjoys the walks so much that she shakes her tail so hard that the rest of her rump follows.:D She doesn't bark at all - just quiet vocalizations low in her throat, but not a growl, when she's very excited - which makes me wonder if at some point someone used a shock collar on her. She puts her paw in my lap and looks at me expectantly. I haven't figured out yet what she wants when she does that but it means something to her because she looks disappointed that I'm not responding. Any ideas?
She tries so hard to get our approval. I think maybe she's afraid we'll send her back or something. I hope that as she learns our ways and we hers that she will have more confidence.
I did notice those teats. Poor thing, she wants so much to be loved. I'm glad she's found her home.
She loves the kids and the kids love her. I wasn't sure how well DS would take to having a dog around because he's had a few bad experiences when younger that soured his love for dogs. He is now very skittish around dogs until he gets to know them well. Fortunately he took to Leela right away at the shelter and loves to throw her the ball or run around in the back yard with her. I think having a neighbor with three super friendly dogs has helped with that. It was so precious when the second night we had her, he came down to say good night to me and gave her a hug as well. She likes the attention she gets from DD, but I think DD confuses her sometimes. DD being four sends a lot of mixed messages so I'll have to do some work with her.
I love checking this thread!
So many great stories and cute pics.:)
Ruby thinks she's Paris Hilton's dog now that she's got her fancy animal-print coat. But she's too big to fit in a pocketbook.

Another flashy blonde.
What a hussy!
Love the leopard print!
SGTiger: wonderful story about your son and Leela! Sounds like a keeper for sure.
I don't remember if I've posted it before, but here is my favorite pic of my two kitties:

Two cats are definitely better than one! :D
Kermit - I hope your baby gets better. Sorry to read about the acl on your other post.
SG - glad to hear Leela and family are adjusting fine. Glad you like the pig. In real life her little legs are pedaling but I can't get it to carry over here.
Zen - leave it to you to be looking at her boobies:p
Llyod rocks! I was asking my son the other day to look at a bulldog to see if he'd like them. He turns his stubborn little red head refusing to look at it and said:
"No Mom. I told you already - I want a Chi-Chi-wow-wa". :D
We had seen a long haired chihuahua at the humane society and he liked it. Man, that kid cracks me up!
MTbdarby, your son sounds like a young man who knows his own mind. Here are two Chi-chi-wow-wa pictures for him. Actually, I'm not sure of the long-haired dog's breed, but he could be a Chi-chi-wow-wa.
Pam
Pam, my son is 6 and wants a dog of his own, to play with and sleep in his bed. From what I've read about the chi-chi's, it doesn't sound like they are the best breeds for a young child to train (generally speaking). Plus he's down by his dad most weekends and the dog would have to stay with me, so most likely will attach to mom anyway...thus my dilemna.
Of course, I have Zeus and I think he's jealous because Zeus has become my shadow since Xena died. Guess we'll see...
My dogs know I'm the boss, but they still sleep with my son. Seems right to them...he's part of the pack, too!
On a parenting and dogs note, I always made sure that I, the mom, was okay with any pet the boys wanted, that it appealed to me and that I was willing to care for it. Because...it would be my pet in short order. They were kids--I didn't expect them to follow through on all the fervent promises to care for it after the initial fun wore off. I don't like dogs in my bed (or cats, but try telling that to the cat!), so all of our dogs have been trained to sleep with one of the boys. When that boy moved out they moved to the next kid's bed. Thus, I have been the long-term caretaker of 5 dogs, 5 or 6 cats, 2 hamsters and way too many hermit crabs to count!
To our kids, moms are the source of all things good. It won't be long before the dogs figure that out, too. The important thing is that the dog knows he's next in line behind the KID.
Karen
Karen, I agree that the dog will ultimately be mine to care for, which is why I'm not a big fan of the chi-chi. Don't know, but small dogs don't do it for me.
I called on 2 dogs this week - a border collie and an elkhound (78lbs!). Both were already taken. I'm thinking it's a sign I should stay a single dog household for now.:p
She looks awesome! I have a Mal, too, but she's somewhat of a "rescue" from a working dog breeder who said she didn't pass the puppy temperament tests. I believe it... she doesn't have the "bold" personality that most of them have, though she still does funny Malinois things like jumping over the back of the couch or coffee table instead of walking around it.
Andrea she's beautiful.I have two Jack russells as well. I tell everybody they are teacup malinois. All crackheads. I wish I got my girl as a pup. They are so cute and innocent when they are little.
Here's Shiloh as a puppy right after the fosterer found him at the shelter with a smashed hip (right). He was about 6-7 months old and that hip had been broken for a month or two. He had surgery (FHO for the vet types out there). He's three years old now and he's not slowed down at all. I've had him for two months now!
He is really cool looking. Does Shiloh have hardware from the surgery? Still wondering what he is. Theres a spaniel breed with his markings. But he must have some aussie in him as well.
No hardware, apparently. The procedure is called a Femoral Head Ostectomy, which removes the ball from the ball-and-socket joint of the hip. Fibrous tissue takes over so there's no bone-on-bone. People who know alot more about dogs than I do say he's likely a border collie-Australian Cattle Dog mix. I don't think he's Australian Sheepdog because his coat is not that thick. He's not a merle, just black and white, like a longer-haired dalmation with big black patches. He points at squirrels, so perhaps he's got some pointer in him. They have similar markings. He could be all border collie, too. I've seen photos of purebred border collies that look alot like him. The ears are like many border collies, except for the fringe. Maybe there is some honorary Papillon in him, but I don't see how a 45-lb dog could be part Papillon.
He's very protective. I have an appointment with the dog trainer tomorrow.
Hmmm... if he points, I'd say he's got a little English Setter mixed in there somewhere. Whatever he is, he's a very handsome boy!
Andrea -- that puppy pic of your Malinois is SOSOSOSOS cute! That cracks me up they just jump over things rather than go around.. is that typical for the breed?
Tulip: We had a dog at Vet School that was a shelter dog -- I did my first spay on her, and she looked a lot like Shiloh (only female!). I always thought she was so beautiful. She found a really good home and I was jealous because I couldn't have a dog where I lived.
I had a 2-hour consultation with a dog trainer today with Shiloh and it was GREAT! He already knows so much, but I haven't had a dog since I was a kid, and back then the dog just ran free all the time. Shiloh has some fears and issues, and now I know how to work with him on getting past is issues. I found out that when we are on walks, I contribute greatly to his fears because I anticipate that he'll freak out and so he usually does. I also let him walk me, but not anymore.
Being the breed or breeds he is, he needs a job, too. So we're doing obedience and learning a new trick each week. It doesn't matter what trick, it's the learning that is important. We're going to work on socializing him with lots of people and dogs with the goal of getting his Canine Good Citizen certification. Once that happens, we'll continue towards therapy doghood.
With his hip, he can't do much agility, although he loves low agility apparently (I haven't tried that with him yet). Also rally obedience is another good way to move forward with him. I also learned alot of other stuff about dog parks (didn't have those when I was a kid).
It was very much worth the money, even though funds are tight these days. I'm looking forward to having structure with him.
I do wish I knew what he is, though. The trainer thinks he's all herder, maybe Aussie/BC. But the pointing has me intrigued, although he doesn't have a soft mouth like bird dogs do (no big lips!)
My friend was also very curious about the breed of her dog, so she had its DNA analysed by a company that does genetic testing. They test for something like 150 breeds. Her dog came up as none of them!
My guys are getting along!!! Twiggy is out of her cone, all healed from being spayed. Eddy LOVES her. He thinks she's a snack cake.
aaawwww, looky all that soft belly fur... :D
Twiggy is going to get beamed up to the mothership any minute. What amazing eyes!
I wanna caaaaaat.....
Thanks! They're very athletic and focused! I think that jumping is just as "normal" a gait as walking to them. So, when she get a little excited and wants a toy that's on the other side of the room, she won't hesitate to just hop over whatever is in between her & the toy!
Here's a photo I found of one in action:
http://www.malinois.com/otvitosha/jump2008mondio.jpg
My mal tries to herd me by jumping up and either nipping my chin or my shirt. Needless to say not a behavior I encourage but thats just her when she wants to play. One requirement for getting into K9 was having a fenced in yard. I tell the instructor in Texas, yeah, just got my yard done, 6' chainlink. She looks at me and said "oh no, you need 8 feet". Apparently these dogs are quite agile and like to climb as well.
Tulip-good luck with the training. I bet your guy would love swimming...when it warms up.
RedRhodie- Your Eddy looks a LOT like my Pearl!!
Here's Pearl...(Lydia also got in on the cream binge though):

I know you all have seen pictures of Frankie the Pug before, but I wanted to include a few of her in her new DoveLewis Therapy Dog band. We're going on our first visit all on our own tonight at OHSU!
I also want to thank whoever it was here that pointed us in the direction of DoveLewis for therapy dog work. It's been a long road getting certified, but well worth it!
Hey Ellen,
I used to have pugs for years- they are the best! :p
Has Frankie lost a bunch of weight?- he looks GREAT!
You might really appreciate this:
http://www.raincitystory.com/flash/screenclean.swf :D
Ahhh, love the pug 'screen cleaner'. I've seen several different puppy breeds of 'screen cleaners'. :D
Frankie has lost 6 pounds! When I got her she was 15 pounds, but due to owner stupidity (clicker training AND full meals...yikes!!) she ended up at 24 pounds. She is now a svelt 18 pounds (breed standard is 14-18 pounds). We changed her food to one she absolutely loves so I can use it as a training tool when needed, and treats are very limited. She also gets walked three times a day, rain or shine.
We jokingly call her diet the 'no opposable thumbs' diet. Sometimes I wish I could go on that diet, but I've grown attached to my thumbs. ;)
And I agree...pugs are GREAT dogs!
I know, I've noticed many other things we have in common in the past as well.
So we both have 'identi-cats'- Pearl/Eddy and their short haired grey buddies Twiggy/Lydia too. :D Plus- Lydia was a rescue cat just like Twiggy!
But we also have a third cat, Eleanor, a brown tabby with white mittens who is about to turn 20. (!) :)
Hi all:
I've talked about my 23 year old Big Kitty a lot on this forum, but I never showed him off. So, here is my Big Kitty. I think this is a picture of him from last year at 22 years old.
Isn't he handsome?
spoke
Oh Spoke, what a handsome guy at 23.
