Dear me, I wish I was that lazy! :D
I'm not sure. It would probably take 20 hours. I don't know if my knees/back would hold out that long. Sometime soon, though, I want to do 50k there.
I was all set to do a 50 mile race a few years ago, but my work schedule switched from 5AM-1PM to 6:30-Done, so I didn't have time to train adequately. And then I discovered road cycling.
LISE!! I'm putting the DVD's in the mail today!! Then I will no longer suck!!
And returning all three different pairs of the Performance shorts. Didn't like any of them.
Now, (not that I have any money anyway) I'm torn between the pair of shorts Susan recommended, Sugois, and a pair of Shebeasts someone else recommended, that have "cooling mesh" along the back, both ~$100, or the knickers in the cool print with a little black tank with a blue flower- about as much as the expensive shorts.
Whe BF went outside this morning, there were two huge packages. We don't know when they came- I went to bed at 8:30, he went to bed at 9:30- never heard anything.
One thing is a big wood and canvas wardrobe for BF, with room to hang stuff, and a bunch of shelves for the world's largest T-shirt collection.
http://tinyurl.com/gjdrj
The other thing was a really pretty off-white/yellow distressed wood "boardwalk cabinet" for Maizey, for her tank to sit on, instead of the super-cheap looks like crap white particle board shelves and falling apart never worked right drawer thing. She has all her stuff and the glass lizard's stuff and the torts' stuff inside, plus BF's cave diving lights and chargers, which needed a safe place to live.
http://tinyurl.com/hqhq8
I am so happy!! Can't wait to get home and assemble the wardrobe.
Cool stuff Nanci!
I was wondering how the shorts were working out for you. Thanks for the update! I have only 2 prs of shorts - both of less than great quality. They work for now, but I'm saving up for some good ones.
Lise - I posted the helmet info in the AV thread. I'd snatch that one on ebay. You might be able to pick it up in person.
General drift...
This sounds wierd, but it's odd how things are really going my way right now at work. I applied for that job, you all know, and since then everything has been falling into place. I have been trying to breed disease resistant fish. This is the first year to get spawns - I have 5 already! That's plenty. I've been searching for genes associated with resistance. I'm sitting here at home analyzing data from my most recent experiment and what do you know - I think I've found one! It's been like that for the past couple of weeks. There are more examples, but I don't want to bore you. I guess I've accomplished what I set out to do here and now it IS time to move on. Unbelievable! It's really a wierd feeling. Does that make sense?
I'm riding a 200k on Saturday. It's part of trying to earn the R12 award by riding a 200k or longer event for 12 consecutive months, as well as counting as the 200k ride for my Super Randonneur award, since I wasn't an RUSA member when I did my 200k in January...
I'm feeling strangely reluctant. It even includes segments of two of my favorite paved trails! I guess maybe it's because I suspect traffic and big hills. Plus it's a hundred miles away, starts at 7AM, and the host hotel is $100, so out of the question (especially when compared to the price of shorts!)
So as encouragement I've ordered the Shebeest Elite Distance 2 shorts. I had a hard time deciding between them and the Sugoi RS Flex shorts which the only reason I was even considering was because Susan recommended them to me- but, I've had two Sugoi shorts that I hate, and have never tried Shebeest (unless the icky knickers that I sent off to CA in NC were Shebeest, which she loves, BTW)
I hope they are nice.
Good luck Nanci! I hope the shorts arrive in time!
Nanci - I just got the Shebeest shorts which are (I think) the ones you are getting. They are comfortable - BUT - that mesh area at the back of the shorts does NOT block sun. After the double century, I noticed the top of my butt hurt. Then yesterday my husband said "The top of your butt's sunburned!!" I hadn't really noticed it til he pointed it out.
So just a safety tip. Maybe stick some sunscreen back there. It could just be that mine are maybe tight and stretched out more - but heck, all cycling shorts seem tight.
Have fun on the 200k. I'll be doing a 200k myself on Sunday! (Roughly).

Hey, MP, I thought, "that is soooo over"! until I realized what you were doing! I just went to "last post" and read backwards from there. I also read magazines from the back. Books from the front, though. Thanks for your well wishes. It truly, truly sucked, but it's all over now. It is so wierd to be so repulsed by even the thought of food.
Fishdr, you truly are a fish doctor! Would that be an Ichthyphysician? :p
Nanci, Maizey and all her beasty brethern are surely the most loved beasts in the entire Eastern seaboard. No other snake ever had it so good. The cabinet looks really nice. Definitely my style. Isaac the cat is sitting at my left hand, purring and sniffing my elbow, now walking over and sitting at my right hand so his tail can rest on my wrist as I type. He would like to take a field trip to your house. To "visit" the snake and the birds...I thought that might not be such a good idea. I didn't tell him about all the alligators that would consider him furry sushi.
Good luck on the 200 this weekend! L.
Sarah,
I figured out I burn _through_ my jerseys, too. There's a whiter area where the sports bra is, and the rest of me is pinkish. Thanks for the warning, though- if I keep them, I'll put sunscreen there.
I _bet_ Isaac would like a field trip...All the cats in Florida like to "play with" the anoles that they find out in the yard.
Nanci
Welcome back MP - I was wondering where you were????
Speaking of cats and anoles...when I lived in Lafayette (LA) my cat was outside one day (I don't let them out often) and caught a green anole. I yelled at him to let it go. He promptly looked at me, looked at the anole and then ripped it's head off. I was horrified! Mr. Fish, of course, thought it was hilarious. Now I can laugh about it, but geez that was gross!
I have a critter problem at my current house. A rabbit. This rabbit and I are going to go at it one of these days. It has eaten all of my broccoli plants. I've protected my green beans, but I'm sure he'll figure out how to get in there soon. It has also eaten my bell pepper plants. Now come on - who has ever heard of a rabbit that eats bell pepper plants????? It ate 15 of them last week. I went to ... Walmart .... AARGH .... and bought more plants that were much bigger than mine that were grown from seed and... it ate 2 of them! I saw it doing it this time. I ran out into the yard screaming at it. I'm quite sure my neighbors think I'm nuts!
Lise - did you get that helmet? I thought about it last night - I should have PM'd you to reduce the chances of somebody else seeing the one on ebay. I hope you got it!
Sheepish confession--I have no idea how ebay works. Plus which, how do I know it's new? I wouldn't give her one that was used. But thanks for your vigilance!Quote:

Lise - I have virtually no experience on ebay either. It says it's new. Maybe you could email the person. It says they are in Chicago. If not - I'm sure one of the LBSs should have it. Good luck!
We have to be careful with one of our dogs - the stray we picked up. He looks like a Golden Retriever, but is really flaky. Someone chopped his tail off - tragic. Anyway - he has a thing about catching fledglings and eating them. I've been seen chasing him around the yard yelling "leave it! leave it". We don't let him outside much at this time of year. He nearly caught an adult cedar waxwing one year. He leaped into the air to get it. Luckily he missed.
I was at a double century over the weekend (see Eastern Sierra in Adventure stories). now I am in new hampshire on business, so I wll only be online sporadically.Quote:

I recently bought my husband some pedals for his moutain bike off of ebay. They were impossible to find anywhere else but were easily found on ebay. And they were new and sealed in the original packaging.Quote:

OK! I'm going to give it a shot tonight! (Keep in mind, I was one of the last people to get an ATM card. Or an i-pod. Or a camera phone. I am something of a techno-phobe. Goes with being a midwife?) Thanks for the encouragement to enter the 21st century, guys!
I don't even have an iPod! Just bought a cell phone last year. My daughter is asking for an iPod, though. She's 4!!!!
Now - at work - I have all sorts of techy things - even a thumbdrive that uses bioscan (recognizes fingerprints for security) and such.
i think it is so cool that you are a midwife. I wanted to use one instead of an ob for my last pg (unfortunately it ended at 11 weeks). After my twin pg which was neccessarily high tech I really wanted a more natural experience.Quote:

Anyhoo. Going to Ohio tomorrow, back Sunday night, may NOT have internet access  if not, will catch up with y'all on Sunday! Have a great weekend!
love, L.
Hear hear! I think that is fantastic to be doing something you really want to do. I'm not, but it isn't bad and it allows me to ride my bike and work at school, field trips, etc. For my next career, maybe nursing. I don't know.
For my next career I want to be a bike mechanic. So i can fix my own dang rear derailleur. Or an acupuncturist. Or a librarian (again). Or a shoe sales-person.
Getting a little burned out on healthcare. Still love it, but I need a break. Haven't had a vacation since November. Need a vacation. Need to get l**d.
Bought a wetsuit today. From my buddies at the kayak shop. Figured I'd get a kayaking suit, cuz I kayak more than I tri. Now I can start swimming. Got 2 months to get good enough that i can swim 1/2 mile. Oooh, Nelly....
My daughter was delivered by a midwife- Steve.
I had a miraculous idea last night. You know I am into wine tasting and wine logging (at my bargain basement level I take it very seriously!) I have two books of tasting notes, with one bottle on each page. At first, I tried really hard to remove the labels and paste them on the pages- but most labels are really hard to remove, especially intact. BF got tired of 20-30 bottles lined up in the laundry room, waiting for their labels to fall off by old age, or something. Finally, I cleared out all the bottles, gave up, and settled for empty spaces where the labels were supposed to go. (I did think about drawing them, but decided that wouldn't work too well). So last night, I had the idea of photographing them!!! And it works!! I print them out on plain paper, three to a sheet, and they are about life-size. I am so happy! I wonder if the wine shop will let me go there and photograph all the bottles I missed...
Knotted, I have coffee on my computer screen and it is your fault.
I love your knew sig quote!!!!!!!!!!
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- State wildlife commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday to remove bald eagles from Florida's list of animals in danger of extinction and to downgrade manatees from endangered to threatened.
The commissioners also voted to upgrade the statuses of the Panama City crayfish and gopher tortoise to threatened species.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission voted 7-0 to strip bald eagles of their threatened classification and to downgrade manatees because both populations have shown signs of rebounding.
Florida's three-tiered system includes classifications of endangered, threatened and special concern, the lowest level.
Wednesday's decisions won't go into effect until management plans are approved for each species, which could take more than a year, officials said. Eagles and manatees remain protected under several federal laws, including the 1973 Endangered Species Act.
The Gopher tortoise, which nests in dunes, has survived for 60 million years but biologists estimate their numbers have dropped by up to 80 percent in the last century due to coastal development.
Under a current state permitting process, developers are allowed to bury alive some of the reptiles as they make way for construction. Under the upgraded classification, a new management plan will be devised that will limit those live burials.
What great news. 60 million years...vs...costal development. Yep, better get the law involved. Amazing. Nanci, do you have a picture of the gopher turtle that outran you on the recent marathon?Quote:

Ooh - I'm a bit on the PMSy side of things today. It always sneaks up on me. I get a bit snitty or impatient or whatever and then I go...ah, it's the Friday before. Yup. Usually recognizing why I'm a little out of character is enough to squelch it, but geez I cannot stand how it sneaks up on me or those around me ;) Just venting...
On a happy note - I ran again this morning. I felt good and ran further and faster than yesterday. That's not saying much, but hey, it's better than nothing. I'm working 1/2 day today (normal for me on Fridays) and I'm going to ride in the 90F heat when I get home. That'll be fun. This will be the first day that I'm going to run and ride in the same day. Should be interesting.
So tired. I didn't get home from New Hampshire til 2 am. I hate flying. I hate connecting through Dulles. I hate waiting for the parking garage shuttle at 1 am when they hardly run any.
Sorry. Just whining.
I am really glad to be home!! :) It's nice to snuggle with the kid after being gone for a few days. And the dog was very demonstrative also! (So was DH, but he had to leave early this morning for work).
Welcome home! Sounds like glorious travelling ;) Dulles is the worst!
I'm heading home to go ride. It's going to be hot! I'm drinking tons of water in the car (1/2 hour commute) and eating a clif bar. Sport beans are going in the jersey with me. Gee, this is going to be fun.
Have a great ride, FIsh !! I gather the tubes came in...
Yup! The tubes came in and I changed the tire (rear) in under 20 minutes on my own! I was dirty and oh so proud!
BTW - I love the saddle! I did a 28 mile ride last Saturday and all parts felt great! I'm planning to go longer tomorrow!
Ride today was super hot (90F/99F real feel) - uck! I could feel waves of heat coming off the road. It was really nasty. I quit at 10 miles because I didn't want to kill myself for tomorrow. I'm riding at 5:30am - it'll be cooler then!
It's been so long I forgot what the new saddle even was...
I noticed today- I still have my little Post-It Note up, with April 26 and April 30 on it, the days the eagle babies were supposed to hatch... :-(
That's so sad Nanci. Have the other ones fledged yet? I haven't had a chance to watch in quite a while.
The saddle is the Terry Zero X. It has little/no cushioning, a cutout, and is awesome. It feels very supportive and keeps the girly bits happy. There is no pain anywhere with this saddle! MP suggested it - she has the non-X version I believe.
Indeedy I do have the non-X version. Got it about 4 years ago before they started making the X. Great saddle. Light, and not too much material going on.
My daughter and a friend are wandering around the streets outside barking. I can hear them echoing up the canyon. Kids are so weird.
My 2-year old would love that! He thinks he's a dog. It's particularly lovely when he comes up and licks my leg and then pants at me. Right now he's singing in the shower. When he was outside, he decided to dump the bubbles on his and his sister's head - hence the early bath.
I wondered why you didn't have the "x" version. I did bike maintenance on all of our bikes this afternoon - cleaned them up, lubed the chains, stuff like that. It was fun - really! I had a blast!
Ouch! I crashed! (see thread in OT). I'm sooooo sore. Hopefully the shakiness will go away soon.
Any suggestions on how to clean the giant ugliness on my leg?
Guess I got out of doing yardwork today...
You know - I just had a "discussion" at work on Thursday about why you should wear a helmet while riding. I kept saying that you never know what will happen and that if you crash without a helmet you could die! A bit dramatic - but boy oh boy am I glad I had a helmet and gloves on today!
