I couldn't even watch the descent when Phil was going on about how dangerous it was going to be. I was too nervous. Riding in the mountains is not for the faint-of-heart. Poor Jens.
Here's a brief report on cyclingnews.
Gotta admit is affecting me on a number of levels ... :(
No kidding. Jens was apparently doing close to 45mph when he went down. I was out riding with divingbiker the other day and at one point we headed down a dip towards a bridge over a creek. After we climbed back up the other side, she told me we'd been doing just over 34mph on the way down. After seeing the photos of Jens' face, I dunno if I'm going to do that again any time soon.
I really, really hope he's alright.
Coolness from the Team Saxo Bank website!
Jens Voigt Is OK Under The Circumstances
[21.07 21:56] An examination at the University hospital in Grenoble this evening has initially given positive reports on Jens Voigt's health after the nasty crash during today's stage of Tour de France. He has incurred a fracture of the right cheekbone and a concussion. For now he is staying at the hospital for further observation.
Jens has sent this greeting to the team:
"I think I was very lucky not getting severely hurt from today's crash. Now I hope that you can focus on the race and I wish you all good luck with the hard stage tomorrow”.
The whole team in France and the whole staff at Riis-Cycling wish Jens Voigt a speedy recovery and hope to see him and his strong and joyful spirit back on the team soon.
Could have been much worse. Best wishes to Jens.
My crash was at about 35 mph according to my Garmin. Not advised. ;)
FWIW, head & facial abrasions can bleed a lot & look very bad (been there done that ... I'm told my face was really banged up and it was initially thought I had broken my eye socket, but turns out I didn't).
So while the photos of Jen's crash certainly look horrific, there's a good chance it'll turn out to be not to be as bad as it looks. Still, a broken cheekbone, gah. :(
Wow -- it looked absolutely horrific, and I can't bring myself to look at any other views of it besides what we saw live this morning. I can't believe he's not more severely injured. I'm a cautious descender under the best of circumstances, and I don't need any more images flashing in my head.
Sorry to hear that, Jo. Hang in there, and remember that you got your first descending test under your belt on Sunday and passed with flying colors!!! :)
Yes, here's confirmation from an eyewitness that your face *was* really banged up.
Those pics of Jens lying on the side of the road brought back a few horrific memories for me as well. I'm reminding myself that it all worked out in your case, and I'm glad that it looks like Jens is going to be fine too.
here's a great article about Jens

Wow, thanks so much trinena, excellent find!
And thanks for the pic, AG. It dates back to my Jens stalking days. :D
And Mel, yep, I totally agree.
I have been sitting up nights here to watch the tour live and when I saw Jens crash I felt sick. He hit so hard I was sure he would be in serious trouble. Thanks for posting all the links everyone. Great to hear it is less serious than I imagined it would be.
He is such a card and will be greatly missed at the tour.
When I saw him crash and skid I was sure he hurt his hip. Cheekbones heal much better than hips (and you don't have to walk on them).
Still...
Just think, Jobob, you and Jens can trade crash stories the next time you meet!
It's amazing that he didn't break anything else. The live feed I was following immediately assumed that he would end up with a broken collarbone. He must've landed just the right way. What a pro.
OMG_d! "The Ox from Grimstad" broke out alone on a class 1 climb ... and kept that lead over the top! The Brit commentators on ... some web site that has live feed ... are talking about him taking his green jersey to the laundry, getting rid of the "spot" Cavendish hexed on it for taking it back through a protest a couple days ago.
