aw, he's cute.
Dear Henry Cat: Why oh why do you keep getting sick? I can't take another round of this. Please just tell me what's wrong.
For the cat owners out there, here's the deal. Chime in if you have any thoughts. Henry threw up at 3 am. It was digested food with a bit if fur but no hair ball. He then threw up some liquid a couple more times, the last episode was at 6:30 am. He has had some water but refused to eat and has been lethargic since. I don't think he has a fever. Once DH gets home, we'll take it. We have a vet appointment tomorrow morning. Henry seemed fine yesterday although I would say that his appetite has been a tad off for the last few days. He otherwise seemed normal.
But Henry has had several rounds of mystery illness over the last couple of years. His last bloodwork in early October was normal. He also had his teeth cleaned in mid October. Since then, both his appetite and fluid intake has been good. He's been energetic and peppy. So today has taken me by surprise. He eats a mix of dry and canned food. He had a bit of food from a fresh can last night that we threw away just in case it was off. We can 't think of anything else that he may have ingested.
I don't expect anybody to have answers. I'm mostly just unloading. Every time I go through this with Henry, I get a little closer to losing it altogether. I love this cat so much....
Aw, poor Henry Cat, and his poor owner! The only thing I would be worried about would be him possibly having eaten string or a rubber band, or something like chocolate or poisonous plants of course. Otherwise my experience is that cats are very careful with what they eat and will leave food that is "off" alone. He may just still have a hairball waiting to come out that makes him feel queasy.
I get worried when our Lyra is lethargic too. Luckily I'm learning that she's a bit of a hypchondriac, so it doesn't take much for her to huddle down and feel sorry for herself. She's usually bouncing around a day or two later.
Henry has finally eaten a small amount of wet food. He also drank some more water. I took him to his box and he peed. I don't think he has a urinary blockage. He is a hypochondriac himself so I am trying to remain calm. It's just so emotionally exhausting.
Mimi and friends, I wish I could claim that was an original, but DH was sharing some Jens Voigt jokes from another board and the pajamas thing stuck with me.
Superman wears Jens Voigt pajamas.
When Jens' watch is off, the space-time continuum adjusts itself.
That sort of thing. I'm glad Don is home and doing so much better. Here's to a complete and speedy recovery.
Indy, I don't have any advice about your cat -- the one who lives in our house can go days without showing her face outside my daughter's room and sometimes I completely forget about her. I hope Henry gets better soon, though.
Roxy
Indy, sounds like a hairball issue to me. Have you tried this malt flavored goop? http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...fm?pcatid=2963
Mine loves it.
Mimi and Catrin - I hope your loved ones continue to improve. That pie sounds delicious.
Indy, could it be an intestinal blockage? Has he pooped at all?
Not today he hasn't. I'm not overly sure about yesterday. With two cats, it's not always easy to tell. He's starting to show a bit more life, but hd also keeps retreating to his private hiding spots. If he's anything short if normal, he's off to the vet tomorrow. I have to be judicious about going to the vet. It stresses Henry out really badly, and upon his return, our other cats freaks out for at least 24 hours because she doesn't recognize him.
As I was writing this, Henry jumped up on my lap and started meowing and making biscuits. That's a good sign!!!
Glad to hear about a good sign from Henry! It is so hard with furbabies because we can't ask them anything, or explain what that person with the sharp objects is doing.
I am feeling a bit down tonight. My neck and base of skull hurts. I am in bed as it is "bedtime" and the alarm goes off in 7 hours, but this will be a rough night.
Mimi -- Such great news about Don. Whatta guy, baking a pie. Woo-hoo! Happy for you both!
Dear tiny little biting ants I keep managing to step on or get on my hand outdoors, STOP IT! Just stop biting me! I am tired of taking Benedryl so I can sleep at night without waking up numerous times to scratch.
Dear Self,
I know that the knitting store is a black hole of common sense. Please brace yourself, scurry in and out quickly, and do not be tempted by the hand dyed merinos near the door. While financial ruin by yarn purchase doesn't sound Soooo bad, it definitely is bad.
Thank you,
Self.
hehehe, been here, done that at the needlework store - in my pre-bike addiction days. Have PLENTY of things to work on lo these 2 years later if I can stay off my bikes long enough to pick up a needle.
Slept terribly last night, however my neck does feel better today. I just over-did things last night. I can lift weights, or I can go to spinning class. Not both in the same evening
Henry visited the vet yet again today. Nothing was obviously wrong with him. No fever, no constipation, no obstructions. His most recent bloodwork in October. showed no signs of diabetes, kidney disease or hyperthyroidism. Given his history of mystery illnesses, the vet suggested doing some additional tests in a couple of weeks, i.e., when he's recovered from what's currently ailing him. The first would be a blood test to look for a certain type of bacterium. The second would be a biopsy of his gut. The doc wonders if he might have IBD or colitis. The doctor admitted, though, that it was a bit of guesswork on his part as Henry is a conundrum. He gets really sick for no apparent reason and then promptly returns to his old self. Assuming he doesn't get cancer or kidney disease, I otherwise see no reason why he can't live a long life, but that life might include some bumps along the way. He just seems to a be a sensitive cat.
I can totally understand that. The last time I went yarn shopping was for stuff for presents for my parents. (Okay, they're not getting done for a long time--I just wrap the yarn, put a note on it and then work at my own pace.;)) It turned into "Okay, now that I've gotten the stuff for Dad's socks, and Mom's scarf (with an extra just in case), there's all this other stuff that's on sale..." I think I ended up with an additional four pairs of socks' worth.
It was a test :) The workout itself was quite light, and I've been taught/learned what I can do that won't overly stress my neck but still do me some good. I've always done both on Mondays during spinning season...guess I will now need to do weights on Sunday and not Monday for now...
Indy, is it possible that Henry has some kind of odd food allergy? Have you changed his food or have the kitty food company changed the ingredients? That is probably reaching, but I do wonder.
I don't think so, but who knows. He's been on the same dry food forever. We added canned food to his diet over the summer and he was fine until September when he got sick with a fever for a second time (the first time was in the summer of 2010) while we were in Missouri. He eats the same handful of canned food "flavors" all the time. If the canned food was the issue, I think he would have shown signs of a problem long before September and would have never recovered from it. I also don't know that a food allergy would cause a high fever. The first two illnesses seemed virus-like. The second one seemed like he just ate something that didn't agree with him.
I dunno. The vet and I are stumped.
Dear Anthropologie,
How hard is it to keep gift boxes in stock Christmas week? Big thumbs down for that.
Dear Local Branch of a Chain Grocery Store:
I'm really glad you had the jars I needed. But do you have to have the Easter Candy out **before Christmas**
Signed,
Ready for people to enjoy the moment and stop hurrying to the next thing
Dear Self,
Today has been a most frustrating afternoon. I had free time on a Tuesday, and I was good and didn't ride, because I feel like I am on the edge of coming down with something. Plus, I already pushed it in strength class this morning.
So, when I finally got up the nerve to make the call to very distasteful woman who has to authorize more behavioral health insurance units for some of my clients (she grills you like crazy on their goals, etc), I realized I forgot to bring home 3/4 SSNs for the clients. OK, deep breath, i went on to do the re-authorizations for 2 who have an insurance where I just have to punch #'s into a phone. The first one couldn't be completed because "the dates overlapped." I am hoping I just have the current ending date wrong. The second one "couldn't be done over the phone." This one might be trouble, as this child lost his state sponsored insurance earlier in the fall and they are still fighting with the parents over this.... he's finally on track after a huge setback and now this?
So, nothing accomplished and I can't even get in my jammies and relax because I have a 6:30 PM session with a dad that is very important, in preparation for a meeting on Thursday.
Hang in there, Crankin!
I love Valentines Day. Even though we go out all of the time, we always go out for a nice dinner or make something really special at home. Last year we spent an awesome day x country skiing and then came home, showered and ate soup and salads at the bar of a fancier type restaurant.
My dad always bought my mom and I a huge thing of candy and often gave my mom a piece of jewelry on Valentine's Day. I still have the little handkerchief with hearts he gave me one year, when I was maybe 4.
Yea, I guess that's why such a Hallmark holiday means a lot to me. It wasn't such a commercial thing in the 50's/60's, and it was more meaningful. Funny, both of my kids do the same special stuff for their wives :).
Indy, thanks for the vote of confidence. I am not going to let it bother me this time. Last time, I got bronchitis I was so stressed with all of the re-autorizations.
Reesha, just saw your post about making the soft hats - that is a kind and generous gesture of friendship.
Your friend will really need and appreciate the hats. A good friend went through chemo for ovarian cancer, and her head was very sensitive, but she needed scarves and hats for warmth.
That is a very sweet memory. I still have the copy of Grease that my dad got me one Valentine's Day. It was my first album. I was so excited.
Well, there's people who buy that stuff months ahead, I guess.
I was surprised a few years ago, when my students started reporting that were getting gifts for Easter! I may not be Christian, but I thought I knew the traditions surrounding this holiday, and this didn't seem right. But, it seems like parents feel the need to overindulge their kids a little more. I've had several families I am working with now tell me they wish they never started the tradition of "spoiling their kids" with an overabundance of gifts at X Mas when they were little, because now they can't afford it, but the kids expect it. One of the women I work with described how she stood in a line for 3 hours on Monday, in the cold, to get some toys from Toys for Tots. There were several fights, the police had to be called, and some people had already been there. There were no Marines in sight .
I just don't get any of this.
Yikes. I am amazed at how much people spend on their kids at Christmas time. I was talking to a parent at daycare who bought each of their kids their own tablet (for about $200/ea). I mentioned I bought DD an iPod Touch . . . come to find out the next day that he went out and bought each of his kids an iPod Touch as well! I guess he couldn't be outdone. I feel a bit bad for DD as the Touch is the only gift she's getting other than some necessities (like snow pants and gloves). And then I think about the kids that aren't getting anything. And the parents that don't even care enough to go to Toys for Tots and completely neglect their kids . . .
We do Easter presents at our house too. But the gift is a new Easter Dress for church and some candy in the colored eggs for the egg hunt :)
Dear Limewave,
Stop obsessing over single speeds. There is no money in the pot right now for one and you JUST got a new mountain bike! I have no doubt you'll get your own single speed in due time. But drooling over pictures and trolling the internet has turned from innocent browsing into a form of self-torture.
~Me
Dear Limewave
just leave your road bike in a single gear, don't shift.
:D:cool::cool::cool:
ps you can always give your daughter little tiny things like a can of her favorite juice or a (insert snack food of your choice) so she has stuff to open.
Dear "nutrition solutions company"
We are REALLY tired of dinking around with your stupid pump to hours way past our bedtime. I cannot believe your tech drove all the way to our house and decided there was nothing wrong with our pump so he left us with the one that was being stinky... and ... so therefore, first thing this morning when we added more food it jammed up again.
we would really like a solution... that works??
I have a doll tea set that was mine as a little girl that I plan to wrap and give to her as well. She knows that she's getting it at some point . . . She's been ogling it for awhile.
Right now I'm downloading a handful of free audio books for her iPod at booksshouldbefree.com. Black Beauty, Treasure Island, Velveteen Rabbit . . . :)
