I'm so sorry about the doggie's tail! How do you slam a kennel door on a tail so close to the behind??? And not admit it??? Poor doggie. He WILL miss it. I'm feeling heartbroken for him.

My parents Rottie, Athena, chases her nub around. It is quite hysterical albeit a little sad because you can tell she thinks she should have more tail. When they had a mixed breed Rott/Lab/Chow companion with a large plume of tail Athena was in awe of it. She would chase the tail and grab it like she was going to steal his tail. My Schnauzers wiggle their stumps with such enthusiam I am glad they don't have a full tail, plus natural Schnauzer tails are like little whips!
MP-Hope your little guy doesn't need an amputation!
Thanks all for your well wishes! We really appreciate it. Russo is home and we are in a watch and see mode with regard to the tail. No apparent nerve damage but they will be monitoring for it. He's sore, but on some hopefully good doggy pain meds. And his date next week is OFF.
And I also loved my tail-less rottie - but there's something about the rottie build that makes that stump seem "right" - all burly and strong. The more aerodynamic lab profile needs a tail. So at least we get to keep it for a while longer.
I hope all goes well for Russo!
//although Chloe doesn't understand all this talk of "tails"
But see - that's another dog, the corgi, who is perfect without a tail. With a tail she'd be too LONG.
And Jack Russell Terriers.
My first dog after my Jack Russells has a whole tail that demurely curves up, out of the way. My second dog is part Golden Retriever, and so her tail has taken some getting used to, when she thumps it on either side of the doorway in greeting, or sweeps it across your snack plate in the living room!

Doggie pain meds... do they come wrapped in cheese?
Veronica
Cream cheese is our pup's choice when it comes to hiding pills:)
Peanut butter. Harder to lick off or just dismantle.
Plus, there's entertainment value in a dog trying to get peanut butter off the roof of its mouth. :p
On a related topic... if you've recently lost a dog whose favorite toy was a squeaky carrot, do NOT go see Bolt. :( I was totally not ready for that.
I took Shiloh to the vet today for shots and heartworm preventative and a general checkup. He was not happy to be there! The vet confirmed that he's most likely Border Collie and Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler). He's healthy, but he has a funky hip. The fosterer told me that he has a broken leg when she found him at a shelter as a 6 or 7 month old pup. The vet today wanted to know more about the hip, so I asked the fosterer. Interesting story.
Just after he left the shelter, he had a FHO--a Femoral Head Ostectomy. That is, they removed the ball of the ball-and-socket joint of his pelvis. The vet who did the surgery several years ago said that he had been living with this broken pelvis for a few months when he was brought into the shelter.
I have to keep him lean and trim, and can't do anything that might hurt his hip, like flyball or crazy frisbee flips. He can, and likes, to do agility, but I have to keep the heights very low. He loves to swim, and that's good for him. He doesn't limp, but he does sit funny, as is apparent in that photo of me and him in the Meet Shiloh thread.
I guess this should be in the Pets thread or the Thread Drift, but with Russo's tail tale, it just seemed like the right place.
Dear Shiloh's rescuer--thank you for taking such good care of my future pup when you found him!
Dear Santa Claus,
or whoever. I must have been a really good girl this year. I have never got so many unexpected presents, hugs and warm wishes from my colleagues/friends ever. Or am I just suddenly noticing it this year? I dunno, but it's warming the cockles of my heart anyway. Feeling very loved and needed,
yours, lph :)
Dear City of Seattle
So why is it that you tell us in case of inclement weather to take mass transit and then you shorten most bus routes and cancel 100 buses? exactly what is safe about waiting more than an hour to hopefully catch a bus that might never come in sub freezing weather?
Dear Ice Storm
Please lose your "energy" and your cold air. Send us rain instead.
Dear Bonnie Cat,
You really don't need to meow CONSTANTLY! There is food in your bowl. You'll get more mackrel in the morning. I know you haven't felt good in ages, but I'm getting seriously tired of your constant complaining. I don't know what to do. Why won't you eat???
