I love my Sidi's. Some are really expensive, but you can get plain old Velcro closures that are lots cheaper and have the added plus (for me anyway) of having a wide toe box and narrow heel. They are clipless.
I would try on lots of shoes. Wear cycling socks - they are generally thinner than other socks.
Foot comfort is paramount for me. If my feet ain't happy, I ain't happy.

I just bought the velcro-closure Sidi road shoes from someone in this discussion group, actually (brand new), and they are SO comfy! Pricey, yes, but worth every penny. The fit is great!
