Handlebar Tape
Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but the bike maintenance thing is new to me and I really only have you lovely ladies to turn to.
The handlebar tape on my bike has begun to split. Is there a good way to temporarily fix this or do I have to re-wrap the handlebars? How do you re-wrap the handlebars - any special tips or tricks to make sure its right?

If the tape is OK but the wraps have separated, you could try rewrapping. But most people would opt to replace the tape. The main trick to a good tape wrap is to stretch it as you go so it follows the handlebar curves smoothly. Depending on the tape, you may be able to stuff some inside the bar end and then attach the plug, or you may have to cut it flush with the bar end. If the tape comes with 2 short pieces, they go around the back of the brake levers before you start wrapping.

Replace it.
I am lazy... I just have the bike shop do it for me. Well worth the money if you ask me.

I'm hard on tape...
Something about how I place my hands on the bars causes it to creep in opposite directions and I end up with a patch of bare bar. Not good for the hands. So, I took the tape off and re-wrapped from the brake up - tight - and then taped the end with electrical tape. No more problems, and it was easy (even for a person who is mechanically chanllenged:p ). It took less than 10 minutes.
If the tape itself is split, replace it...

Tape is cheap. Replace it. It's not difficult to do. Follow dirctions and use patience, don't rush. Or ask the shop to do it. Some will do it for free (or better yet - have a bicycling friend - ask them!)

Definitely go to the LBS, and have one of the mechanics put it on for you. If they charge you for *that*, you might want to think about finding a new bike shop. It might take us about 20 minutes to figure it out, but a mechanic will do it in just 2 and it will be perfect.
Not to mention... I think it's nice to develop and good raport with the people who work at your LBS, instead of rushing in, paying, and rushing out.

I have a bike "do person" that handles all my stuff, but our local LBS does it for free also. Do any of you double tape? I do on the top(flat) section of my bars! I am totally spoiled to it now.
