Hawaii Vacation

So I want to go to Maui and Kaua'i in November. I have been to Oahu and the Big Island about 5-6 years ago. I really wanted to go this past year for my 50th B-day but it did not work out. I just don't know where to begin....any recommendations on area or place to stay on either of those islands? I figure we will fly into Maui and then hope over to Kaua'i for a few days. Or recommendations to stay on one island the whole time?? As most of use here on TE, I like outside activities so looking for natural areas. Love to enjoy the beach, walk, run, kayak and other island activities. Not about the shopping or spa treatments. So any one with ideas can post here or send me a PM. Thanks!

I have never been to Maui, but we went to Kauai last June. There are two distinct sides (and climates) on Kauai. The south is sunnier, more arid, better access to the canyon (fabulous hiking!) and great if you are a beachy/sun-worshiper. The north is more tropical, rainy and lush (though it rarely rained on us for more than a couple of minutes here and there). It's a great location if water sports are your thing (kayaking!). I preferred the north, but there are tons and tons of active things to do on both sides of the island. You really can't go wrong!

We actually stayed in Kapa'a which is on the east side and half-way between the two extremes. We did this intentionally so that we could go both directions, but we were there for 10 days. For just a couple of days, I'd pick either north or south and avoid wasting the travel time. It's not a big island in miles, but there is only one main road going from one side to the other so traffic can be a problem.

Even though the popularity of the island is growing, it's a very, very long way from urban. You won't find much nightlife or high-end shopping but I gather that's not really your thing (it wasn't ours!). I would suggest getting the Yelp app for dinning recommendations (free and effective!). We also had good luck with the 'Kauai Revealed' app on one of our smart phones for finding activities and recommendations of things to do. it was also super helpful for finding hiking locations (which is pretty much a free activity).

If you want more specific recommendations, I have them. I would recommend our hotel, the kayak company we worked with, one of the zip line companies (for both ATV rides and ziplines), a horseback riding/ranch, the luau we attended (one of two on the island) and a few restaurants. I'd be happy to share the names/information if you want them...just let me know.

I think time of year matters for kayaking off Kauai. When we were there in February I don't think any kayak tours were being held off the north coast.

Yes, that's a good point. The waters off the northern part of the island can be incredibly rough (open Pacific!) and they don't do the Napali coast tour during that time. There are other trips though - I think there are some off the east coast actually...so maybe Kapa'a is a good place to stay if you are there in November and want to sea kayak. Kauai is the only island in Hawaii that has a navigable river on it, too...so you can experience that year-round, too.
