Thyroid problems in families

So, now that I have this new diagnosis I've been reading way more than I probably should. I'm now wondering about my 18 year old son. He has had a problem with depression for a few years and recently he's started meds to help with it. Don't get me wrong, he has a good reason for depression (not that depression needs a good reason) due to family history (mine) and tough events he's had to go through. But now I'm wondering if I should have his thyroid checked. Looking back I've had a lot of the symptoms for a long time. It wasn't until the irregular menstrual cycle though that it occurred to me to go to the doctor.

My sister and her daughter also have it. I've read that it can run in families. He's only 18, but I'm wondering if I can get his shrink to order a blood test or whether I should take him to the GP or whether it's a silly idea altogether. Forgive my disjointed thoughts. My mind is going faster than my fingers can type.

I think it's probable. My mother, two aunts and my brother as well as myself all have thyroid issues. I don't see any harm in asking for the test.

My friend's 20-ish-year-old son has thyroid problems, and so does she. I admit I was surprised when she mentioned it (it seems to be a middle-aged woman thing). I was diagnosed last year as hypothyroid and the more I learn, the more I think everyone should get tested.

I don't know what your son's future plans are, but being treated for depression can interfere with some career dreams. I wouldn't be able to keep my medical certificate if I were being treated (pharmaceutically) for depression. I'm not saying don't get treated if it's needed, just that if something else may be involved, it's worth looking into. Good luck!

Trust me, I know all about that. My brother is a Col. in the Army and has suffered with depression for years, but refuses to get treatment because it would hurt his career. My son went through 2 or 3 years (it's hard to keep count) of therapy before I finally decided to let the therapist recommend a psychiatrist and start drug treatment along with therapy. I'm now thinking though that it's worth at least checking out his thyroid. BTW I'm 43 (or at least I will be in a couple weeks) and he's 18.
