Point Reyes National Seashore

Thom had to play tourist for a day for a work assignment, so we decided to bike from the Bear Valley Visitor Center at Point Reyes out to the lighthouse. We had gorgeous weather, stopped at a little bakery (not Bovine - Busy Bee?) for some local baked goods on the way out. Fantastic scenery, the cows out there have it good! A pasture with a view.

There's a lot of climbing on this route. It's mainly rollers, but some of them are fairly steep and not short. On the way back we detoured up Mount Vision. This is a 4 mile, 1000+ climb. The Krebs map gives it 5! >>> markings and 1 >> . In a 4 mile climb! That's what they give to the top of Diablo at 17% It had started to cloud over, so the views were great, but not as spectacular as they could be on a clear day. It's a very narrow road, maybe a lane and a quarter, with lots of turns. The descent was fun, except for the section with wet pine needles. Oh and the car that decided to pass me - even though I was doing well over 30.

It was great day - ended with some good pizza at a little place in Inverness.

I love it over there. Some day we have to go mountain bike the Bolinas Ridge. 11 miles up and 11 miles down with incredible views of Tomales Bay. Then, fresh hot popovers at Pt Reyes Station Cafe. We might even get Miss Kim to go because there are no cliffs to fall off.

there's a century ride up there, no? Anybody done it? Recommend it?

I love the NorCal area and an excuse to ride up that way would be very welcome ...

Which century are you thinking of? I don't know that any actually go out to Point Reyes - although the SF 200K brevet did.

If you don't mind me asking what does your husband do that he gets to have fun like that for work! :D

He's the Business Systems Manager for Lonely Planet - a travel book publisher.

We actually thought parts of the assignment were a little bit silly. You were supposed to ask someone for some money - under the guise of testing the kindness of strangers. And then give that money away - being responsible. That's just not us to ask for money. We did stop (in the car on the way home) and help some girls from the Stanford Racing Team who were having trouble with chain suck. I figure that's being plenty responsible. :D We'd have stopped anyway.

Regarding the Holstein, I just left a voice mail message with the ride coordinator asking for this year's date. The receptionist confirmed that the ride was being held this year but she had no date yet so she transferred me to the ride coordinator's voice mail.
