I check my LBS, but if I have something specific in mind that they don't carry I google.
We get some things at brick and mortar shops, but we end up getting a lot online, too. When you have twelve bikes, you buy a lot if stuff. Speedgoat, Jenson USA, AE Bike, GVH (for groupsets and components), Competitive Cyclist, Colorado Cyclist, Velo-Orange, just to name a few. Of course, there's Performance and Nashbar. Wallingford Bicycle Parts is a good source for Brooks saddles and other touring accessories.
Parts, accessories, etc., we get 99% on line, as DH does all the work. Lately, we've been getting a lot of stuff from the UK, as they have great deals, free shipping to the US, and it doesn't take that long. Once in a great while, I buy something like blinkie ankle/wrist bands at the LBS near me, but not the one I bought my bike from.
Clothing/accessories I buy exclusively from Terry or TE. Sometimes DH will buy me something from one of those places that sends incessant emails, i.e. The Clymb, Back Country, etc. But I mostly order from those places for x country ski/hiking gear.
For my bike it was mostly LBS. I have a different seat collar in purple they ordered for me after I saw it on the internet. My wheels were custom built with purple hubs and some purple spokes by Industry Nine but I had the shop order them. My grips also coordinate with my bike and I did order those off the internet.
FWIW I am sponsored by a shop so I get a modest discount on parts, anything in the shop, anything they order for me and labor. Once you factor that I do not have to pay shipping my LBS is cheaper than ordering online and I am keeping my friends there employed! I mostly wear shop clothes I was sponsored but before I was sponsored I bought much of my clothes online. I do have a choice of countless shops in Austin but other than REI I am loyal the one that sponsors me unless I win a giftcard which happens at races and local events. :)
All over the place. The latest was from Sky King here on the forum. She helped me match (as closely as possible) a Zimbale bag, Brooks Pre-aged saddle and Velo Orange chain stay protector for my SOMA Buena Vista.
Very personalized service!
