Ideas:
Our local public radio station has an annual music/video sale and is always looking for donations.
I donated over 700 vinyl albums to a local community radio station
Craig's list ( super cheap or free) or Freecycle
A few years ago I looked for a way to recycle VCR and cassette tapes and found nothing reasonable -- just one company in California that I would have had to ship them all too.
I think I donated the pre-recorded VCR tapes to Good Will. Most of what I had consisted of movies and songs I recorded onto blank tapes, and I threw them out.
make them into a sculpture?
I like Mimi's idea. You could donate them to a local art program for kids or seniors.
The elementary school where I worked only had one working VHS player, so all those VHS tapes never went to use. When the library cleaned house and got rid of them, some of them went to the science teacher and the others went to the aftercare program, but I seriously doubt any of them have been watched. Well, maybe one or two by the science classes.

+1 on Freecycle or Craigslist.
Yeah, see, that's what I'm talkin' 'bout right there!
Go, Lime!

I have the same problem. A lot of them are home-recorded, so donation isn't a option.
Recycle! Discourage hoarding which usually results in locker storage which encourages the urban sprawl of western landscapes with long-term storage facilities. You get my drift. :) Nothing like knowing you are approaching a city-centre by passing the outer limits of storage locker sprawl! :)
Pull the tape out and let the cats play with it?
One thing about donating: Make sure the group/organzation wants what you are giving, or has some use for it. Otherwise it just becomes their trash instead of yours.

I agree!
