Okay, help! Yesterday I got my hair cut. While at the shampoo bowl (I hate those things) the stylist put a deep conditioner on and had me sit there for five minutes with my neck in the dang neck yoke on the bowl. Last night and this morning, I have this irritating pain from my neck going down my right shoulder. Ideas? I will put some heat on it and take some ibuprofen, hope it feels okay to ride tonight!
I get this ALL the time...from a certain 4-legged furbaby who insists upon stealing my pillow and pushing my head off to a bad angle.
Since this cat is my hubby's "baby," I make my hubby give me a good neck/shoulder rub. I've thought about getting one of the Homedics shiatsu neck massagers, too, since this happens with such great frequency. So much so that I have a really hard time turning my head to the right to look for traffic while running or a few spots on the MUP that come out at a funny angle to the street.
This pain/stiffness can hang around for the better part of a week, FYI.
Just yesterday I did something to my neck/shoulder, thanks to a combination of computer use and a poorly placed backpack strap.
A hot shower and gentle stretching seem to have done the trick for right now...
Heat's likely to just make it worse. I'd ice it instead.
I hate those shampoo bowls. Such an uncomfortable position, there's usually bright lights shining directly into my eyes. I always tell them to just wet my hair because I just washed it.
Ow. Those things are terrible.
Since it was hyperextension that hurt your neck, does it help to relax it into flexion (just let your chin drop toward your chest with everything relaxed)?
I put some gentle heat on it (one of those herb cloth bags you heat in the micro) it is somewhat better and yes it helps to put my chin on my chest and stretch so am doing that. Can't put my left ear to my shoulder as that stretch is the muscle that seems to be irritated. Am riding tonight but think it will be slow and short. And yes, the DH gave me a neck rub and will do again later. next trip I am steering clear of the shampoo bowl or making her put a towel down for a cushion

If the pain goes down your upper back/shoulder blade area at all, you can give yourself some relief by getting a tennis ball or similar ball and placing it between you and a wall, in the sore area. By rolling around against the ball you can target the sore spot...if DH isn't available. ;)
Got my hair cut on Saturday. The stylist was running a bit late, so I decided that instead of being my usual uptight shampoo-bowl hating self, I would let them shampoo my hair rather than saying that I had just washed it at home so they only needed to wet it.
So, the back of my head started hurting where it rested on the edge of the bowl. After a while I started to move around to try to make it hurt less. This caused water to run down my back. The woman washing my hair then tried to dry my back off, but the gown was totally soaked.
So I went into the changing room to get a new gown. This is where I noticed that the hair washer had broken the chain of my necklace with the towel as she tried to dry my back and neck. If I hadn't changed the gown, I probably wouldn't have noticed that and the necklace would had fallen off and gotten lost. And it's a necklace with sentimental value that I've had since junior high school.
And the back of my head is bruised -- it's still tender to the touch.
From now on, I will remain my usual uptight self and tell them just to wet my hair.
