the magical powers of proper bike fitting
Last Thursday I went to the LBS to have my bike fit updated. Apparently I was doing it all wrong! My stem was too long, my seat too far back, my cleats not advantageously placed, my saddle too wide for my sit-bones. And I went ahead and ordered new handlebars with the awesome ergo flats and shallow drops.
Since making all of those changes, my avg pace has gone from 15 mph to 16.5 mph! In less than one week people. Granted, this is an average over 25-30 miles, whereas I know I can sustain 15 mph for 75 miles. But I am doing my first century tomorrow, and I'll be interested to see what my total speed gain over the longer distance will be.
Anyway, this is a big plug for getting properly fitted. It will make a huge difference to you in terms of riding comfort and performance. Totally worth it!
