First road ride!
Well, I am very excited to report that my first road ride is complete! Yesterday my dh and I went about 12 miles, looping from my house - which involved crossing a busy, busy road at traffic lights but then some nice rolling country roads. All was well until someone backing out of their driveway almost hit me - I yelled so loud I think I shocked myself! - and then I was pretty shook up when it came time to cross the road back again but I regained my composure, sucked it up and crossed at the light. And I was so proud of myself. No fear riding except at my first pothole, lol-we are in PA!, and felt pretty confident for the majority of the ride. I am so glad I bought my bike!!:)

Congratulations! It gets easier and easier (or, it gets faster and faster, depending on your mind set ;)). Glad to hear it turned out well! You should be proud of yourself.
If you want great advice for dealing with cars, check out the book "The Art of Urban Cycling" http://www.amazon.com/Art-Urban-Cycl.../dp/0762727837 which will give you some pointers for how to handle yourself in traffic, including defensive maneuvers like where to position yourself in the lane, and how to make an emergency stop or turn. I get a lot of people backing out and u-turning in front of me during summer especially, and that book has made me a lot safer in those situations.
