I have 4 pair. A bit excessive, yes, but I tend to lose one or the other so it's nice to have spares around when one glove goes missing. I have the PI gel ones, too. LOVE them!!:D
I have a pair of Ibex Kilo II that I just got for colder weather - PI Carbon for when I want a FF glove without insulation - and three or four pairs of fingerless gloves that I rotate in warm weather. Normally I keep it to two pairs of fingerless gloves  but I picked up a pair from the clearance bin at the LBS recently, and then got another pair for Christmas.
Actually, one glove is MIA right now, so technically I have three and a half pairs. :p
I keep them until they're either worn out to the point of being unwearable, or damaged in a crash.
I need to replace a pair of Specialized BG Pro gloves but I haven't found a good replacement model yet. I also like using my mountain bike gloves for road rides.
I wear what's on sale and fits my big paws.
In the box, for short finger gloves, I have Canari (crochet backs, not too keen on 'em, but they were $5 at STP), Castelli (very nice), Nike (meh..just okay), Trek (also okay...I think they only brand them as Bontrager now), Terry (nice, but they don't match many of my kits...is that bad of me?), Champ-Sys (also very nice), Pearl Izumi (okay, but like the Nikes, a p.i.a. to get off after a ride), and Descente (I don't honestly recall if I like them or not). Maybe one or two other brands in there. I don't recall.
For long fingered gloves, I have Castelli (nice), Descente Wombats (nice), PIs, and some other brand of lobster gloves I don't recall that I also got from STP and are marketed towards snow mobilers.
I probably keep gloves far longer than intended. Those Canaris are probably 8 years old. I recently threw away a pair of Nikes because I crashed with them and they were torn and bloody. Bad JuJu.... Generally, I don't replace. I just add to the box. I seem to have a hard time parting with gloves. Kind of like sport bras.
Oh...e.t.a. Two things DH and I now look for in gloves: No velcro (which sticks to other things in the wash), and finger pulls - either cups at the fingers or webs b/t fingers - to help slide the gloves off. Those two things rate a glove high on our lists.
