Home Spin Bike?

I'm a big fan of spinning, at least in a gym setting. After moving last September to a smaller town south of Indy, I've struggled to find a new gym that offers spin classes at a time that's convenient to my schedule. As winter approaches, I'm reaching a dead end as to how to establish an exercise routine. I was set to start running again, but my PT is discouraging it thanks to the arthritis in my hip that I was just diagnosed with. I already practice yoga and do fair amount of fitness walking and hiking. I miss the hardcore sweat of a good spin class though.

So, I'm considering getting a home spin bike. I do have a Cycleops trainer already, but I have always preferred the feel of a spin bike over the trainer. If I got the spin bike, I would likely sell the trainer (which is has barely been used) to offset the cost. Does anybody have a home spin bike? If so, what make and model? Anything to look out for?

I have no advice on this, but wish you luck in your search. It does sound like a good solution, though it is a shame that there isn't any place in Franklin where you can attend a good spinning class.

I'd also love a home spin bike. I don't like the feel of my bike on the trainer, and sometimes rollers just don't work for my desired workout.
Around me, there's a wholesale place that buys used Spin bikes from fitness centers, reconditions them, and sells them (sometimes, they have brand new ones).
They have Lemond RevMasters, Schwinn, Star Tracs (which my gym uses)...their stock is constantly rotating.
When I'm ready, I'd look here for what they have at that time. More costly, perhaps, than a Performance one, but it would be one I know could handle a spin class environment, so it could handle me in my basement!
Maybe there's something like this around where you are??

Craigslist for a good deal? If you sell the trainer, you could probably get $100-$150.00 for it depending on which model it is. I just got a good deal on a CycleOps trainer myself, but I would have paid that much for the Magneto used.

If you won't use the trainer, then definitely get the stationary bike. I haven't ever been a huge fan of the gym machines and prefer my own bike, so I guess I made the right decision with my trainer.

I linked to the one in our area. It's called ProFitness Wholesale of Maryland.
I don't think it's a chain. But if you Google'd "wholesale fitness [your area]" perhaps you'd find something similar.

We should be able to get a fair price for the trainer. It's a 2006 Cycleops Fluid trainer with little use. We use Craigslist all the time for stuff like this so that's no problem.

DH is on board with my idea. Hopefully, he'll like the spin bike, too, as he doesn't care for the trainer either. We just need to start looking at what's on the market.

This isn't the perfect solution, as I'd much prefer to go to a gym (I'm a pretty social person), but it beats hanging out on the couch.

I am not a big fan of spinning in the gym or at home but certainly have friends that like it. I guess it would be a good solution for winter weather too if you like biking. Anyway, I would stop in at the local gym and ask the cycling class leader for some advice. I'm sure they would know a lot about them.

I'm actually pretty familiar with gym-quality spin bikes and spinning itself. The Y tested out several models a few years ago, and I tried a bunch. I have a strong preference for one brand in particular. I'm mostly concerned with getting one that works for me (I'm 5'4) and my 6'2 husband.

I got mine on ebay, now if I'd only use it. :o It's a refurbished Schwinn, not sure of the model -- way old would be my guess.

I used to take a lot of spin classes several years ago and loved it. I forgot what type bikes they had...it was about 10yrs ago. I injured my back and had to stop riding for a few years. Once I got back into riding I used to use my wind trainer in the basement. It was okay but very loud. DH found me a spin bike on Craigslist. It was a very good price and I have used it a lot. It is a Lemond RevMaster. I like the way it rides and is comfortable. It also has many adjustments to fit to each individual person.
