The SO and I are planning to ride to a family get together which is somehwere between 35-40 miles each way. We have never ridden this far. The longest ride I have this year is 35 miles. Are we asking for trouble?
We are both in decent shape. The weather will be beautiful and we will have about 3-4 hours between the ride there and the ride home. I am a little nervous about it.
Can you get a ride from a family member if you decide it was indeed crazy? I'm betting you'll be fine, though.
Did you ride that kind of distance last year? How strong have you otherwise felt riding this year? Do you generally feel spent or sore or are you ready to get on the bike again the next day? Will you be dealing with any strong winds tomorrow?
Depending on how you answer those questions, I imagine you'll be okay. Tired, but okay. The break in between will hopefully revive you enough to ride home? Is there anybody available to bail you out if you get there only to decide that you don't have it in you to get home?
Thankfully we can call someone to bail us out if we have to. It's supposed to be beautiful and not windy. The morning ride should be wonderful as the weather will not be too hot. I am primarily worried about the ride home. I live in SC so the afternoon ride will be around 85-89 degrees forecasted and I know I will be tired. I also know that my butt, neck and back will be sore. Maybe I will pop a couple of motrin before we head back. Our longest ride together was about 40 miles and that was last fall. :eek:
Yes, you'll probably be tired. Stay hydrated. Eat a healthy meal during the break, but nothing overly heavy.Quote:

My body is balking at being on the bike again, in part because the bike fit issues that plagued me last year are plagueing me again. I think you can do it. :D With a nice break in between to rehydrate and fuel up your body you should have no problem. And think how pleased you'll be when you accomplish something that was a bit of a challenge.
I just did a ride WAY out of my comfort zone. On my recent trip to So. California, I rode 75 miles with 4750 ft of climbing in 80 degree heat on a rented bike. :eek: My husband and brother in law kept saying how hard the route was and that they would come looking for us in case I needed a ride home. Nothing gets me going more than someone saying I can't do it. I surpassed my expectations and had a fantastic ride. And now my BIL thinks I'm some kind of super bike rider :cool:
For what it's worth I ALWAYS take two Aleve before any ride over 50 miles. :rolleyes: bikerHen
Is there anywhere to stop on the way back to take a break and hydrate and refuel? This would help a lot. Especially if there are a couple stops on the way back. It will take longer but the rest breaks will surely help.
You can do it.
You might not feel too hot the next day, and you might not want to get on that bike again for a few months. But don't let that stop you! :D
