Pig Pedal (almost)

Our first annual "Pig Pedal" (the name got nixed for the official title, but we all called it that) Police Bike Race was held Saturday. It was a team time trial format, over very twisty paved trail, some unpaved trail, and a short stretch of road. It was about 5 miles in length, done in full uniform on our patrol bikes (basic Trek MTBs equipped with packs for patrol). I was the only woman. It was cold and had been raining all week, but I kept the slicks on my MTB even though I knew I would struggle with the mud on the unpaved portion. The first half of the course went well, I am fairly fit and experienced and for such a short distance didn't feel like I had to pace myself, I was pretty sure I could hammer most of the way without wearing myself out. That mountain bike is HEAVY and biking in my gear is harder than being footloose and fancy free on my road bike. The course was not closed to pedestrians, so that was certainly a factor for everyone. I went out pretty slowly, and took a minute to get my feet in the dang toe clips, I am used to clipless and hate those things. Once I hit my stride, I flew. Because it was wet, there were plenty of places i had to slow down...where the course crossed itself it was me or another rider, I slowed way down to let him cross. On the offroad portion I slowed again, and on the incline I popped off and pushed rather than try to struggle up the muddy hill with slicks, I think everyone had to push. Nevertheless, I posted a good time, was 5th overall individually. I did it in 16:32. Our team struggled, though. The young, fast, superguy did it in 15:59 (he was on fire!!), but the other two guys posted 18:00 and 21:20. That pretty much sunk us. But it was fun!
For a first bike race, it was well organized, and raised $3200 for the Alliance for Children, which was a great plus.
And I won a knife set in a raffle!

Woohooo! It sounds like a lot of fun to watch, as well as ride, in this one. You were only 33 seconds behind the young, fast guy...that's impressive!

That sounds like it was really fun- and would have been fun for people watching, as well as raising money for a good cause.

What a great cause! It sounds like a lot of fun. You did fantastic! I think that I would have a problem getting on a mountain bike again after riding my road bike for so long. I am sure that it felt heavy under you!
