Need help - food allergies and portable nutrition
I'm hoping someone else out there can help me out here... I need nutrition options for my long rides (40+ miles).
I have multiple food allergies, but the biggie is Tree Nuts (pretty much any nut that's not a peanut--which yes, I know is a legume, but whatever :D). So, most commercially available protein bars, snack bars, and even some crackers and cookies are off limits for me due to cross-contamination.
To make matters worse, my body needs its protein, lots of it to function well. I still need carbs, but protein keeps my blood sugar stable so I don't bonk on long rides. I need a good mix of carb+protein. Anyway.. I've been making my own protein bars with granola, honey, peanut butter, whey protein powder and dried fruit. I'm burning out on the combinations I've been using, and I need one of two things:
1. Recipes for protein bars that don't have tree nuts (preferably roasted peanut free--see below).
2. Recommendations for commercially available tree-nut free products.
Oh yeah--I've had people suggest just plain peanuts several times.. That's great except I have to buy raw peanuts and shell/roast them myself because all the available peanuts are processed on the same equipment as tree nuts (learned that the hard way).
Thanks in advance!
