OK... I can't understand WHY my gears can't just all WORK without rubbing against the derailer (???) at some point.
I have had it adjusted and the guy at the shop said, "It's just going to do that". Either I get it adjusted to rub in the lower gears, or in the higher gears. But I can't have all the gears running smooth without rubbing.
It's really annoying!!!!
Does anyone else have this issue with their TREK 1000/from 2004? What did you do to fix it?
are you cross-gearing?? The chain can/will rub when it's cross-geared.
My son told me that that is pretty standard with the gearing on nearly all bikes in that price range (Mine is a trek 1000 too and so is hubbys) You have seen how my bike shifts at times. It isn't just the treks either - it is ALL the bikes with that gear set apparently. It peeves me too. Thankfully my son can make minor adjustments to it and fix it, but when he goes back to school in August, I will be hosed.
This is the specs on the gear set on the trek 1000: (Tiagra set)
Front Derailleur Shimano 2203
Rear Derailleur Shimano Tiagra
Crankset Bontrager Sport 52/42/30
Cassette SRAM 850 12-26, 8 speed
I don't need Dura-ace by any means, but I want something I don't have to monkey with! The 105 is the next step up in gearing, then Ultegra and then top of the line Dura-Ace. The 105 gear set can be had for about 900.00 on a trek 1200 or other brand bike, the Ultegra can be gotten on about a 2000.00 bike of any given brand. My next gear set will likely be a 105.
I am already eyeing my next bike....but to get a real difference in gears, It means spending a lot more money....
If you would like my kiddo to show you how you can adjust it some yourseslf so you don't always have to take it in to the shop, bring it by - he will be home after 8 this evening.
I know my husband wouldn't let me get a bike that didn't have at least Ultegra-level components. (I have a 2004 Specialized Roubaix Elite.) He had racing buddies with 105 set ups and I guess they didn't last well. He's had the same Ultegra components for about 10 years and they still work great.
When I first got my bike, both derailleurs were kind of sketchy and I would have nasty noises in some places, but I got it tuned up about 3 months ago and haven't had another problem with it since.
Hhhhuuummmm... you gals used some terms that made my head spin... as I am not too "technical" when it comes to components on these bikes.
Technotart... thanks for offering up his help! Unfortunately, I am taking the bike up to the shop tonight... to upgrade the computer. But... maybe another time... before August?
Yea, I figured I would have to get a more expensive bike... as I got better and needed better gearing.
Well then, maybe my next gear set will be an ultegra - that's what my son recommends as the minimum for anyone who is going to race or do this seriously or frequently!
I have a Trek 1200 and a Lemond Zurich. Completely night and day when it comes to the gearing. The Zurich is complete ultegra/ultegra 10 and I certainly feel the difference (and go faster). I haven't had the gearing issue you mentioned in the 1200.
A guy at the bike shop showed me how to slightly move the derailer with my left brake shifter.
I am going to try that to see if that fixes the issue.
Otherwise... I know that next time... I get better gearing on my bike! Now that I know I love to ride... I would be willing to invest in a bike!
On another note... I upgraded my computer... and damn if they didn't screw up the wires (it is wired right, but a very sloppy job)... and they didn't give me back my old harness for my old computer (I wanted to give it to a friend)!
That sloppy wiring is going to GLARE at me!
I have a 2005 Trek, no gearing problems yet, however I'm thinking of upgrading gears, etc. wondering if I should just buy another bike. What is more expensive. I like most people have bills to pay and kids to feed so I don't want to go into the poor house on this.
well, they will fix it - and if they won't Corey will. I'd make em do it right, AND I'd ask for the old wiring! They'll give it to ya - or they should!

They don't toss anything - they throw it in a spare parts bin. If they ditched it, then they owe you a new one even if they have to take it out of a package to give it to you. I really would let them know - perhaps they had someone helping out in the back who usually doesn't and that person wasn't well supervised.
You know, when you are paying for service, you have the right to expect it to be done right.
Corey agress with me - says the mechanics have been bombed with work and they have had some odd helpers the last few days because they have been so busy. They will be happy to make it right for ya!
