Going to San Francisco in September

We've decided we're going to San Francisco this September 19 - 24 ---- haven't decided where we're going to stay yet, very excited..... I was there about 23 years ago. Anyone have any hotel recommendations? We're not going to rent a car, going to walk and use public transportation. I don't carry a purse so I've got to shop for a bag(not a purse), but maybe a Timbuk2 Metro, something like that. Any suggestions?

It's right in the heart of San Francisco. By everything you'd want to be by. Walking distance to everything. We had rented a car, but it ended up being parked the entire time we were in the city.

We like small, eclectic, original, European style hotels so the Cartwright has always been our favorite and it is right in the heart of everything. You absolutely do not need to rent a car, unless you want to head over to Marin or up to Sonoma or Napa. If you are going to be there on a Saturday morning, SF has the most fantastic Farmers' Market at the Ferry Plaza on Embarcadero.

Make sure to pack lots of layers! It gets cold at night or when it's foggy here.

Yeah, but that's especially in the summer months. Come September/October the Central Valley starts to cool down, which stops the hot-air-rising midday "pump" that pulls damp air in off the Pacific across the cold Humboldt Current making all that afternoon fog. So Sep/Oct is when San Francisco gets its best weather, before the shorter Fall days and the on-coming rainy season make for cooler weather overall by November. You've picked the best time to see SF. :p Still, a heat wave in the Valley can still pull in the fog now and then, so do bring a fleece jacket just in case.
