Coming down the hill today, after 90k, my cell phone POPPED out of my pocket on a bump and when I turned around, a truck was crushing it, then 3 more cars...I didn't go back to retrieve it, or pretend that I could find the sim card in the heavy traffic. Luckily it was an old cell phone, pre paid with no money on it...so no big loss, actually had a laugh to see it in so many bits. We stuff a sock on top next time, no popping out...:cool:
Yikes!!! I'm always terrified that's going to happen when I'm on a fast descent with my butt way up. I was starting to think my fears were unfounded but I guess not!
It's a little scary to be without a phone, isn't it, even though you were lucky there was no big monetary loss... hope you're back connected soon! ;)
I lost my cell phone last week, and I thought, Oh Joy, now I can get an iphone! But then I found it and it works, so no iphone...bummer.
this loss is abit foreign to me....I haven't had a cell phone yet. :rolleyes:
I don't leave my cell (a very nice HTC PDA with all kinds of stuff in it) in my pockets when I ride. One crash, or forgetting to empty my pockets before the spin cycle and it's gone. I put mine in my seat pack, in a plastic baggie in case I forget to remove it before washing my bike. When I crashed and totaled my frame a few months ago, the phone was fine, tucked away from the carnage against a soft spare tube.
Same here, but in a bubblewarp. I often turn it off during my riding, since I might not be able to hear it ringing.Quote:

I used to commute on my bike through some rough areas in Washington, DC. After nearly getting knocked off my bike by some rock-throwing little thugs, I decided that my phone should always be on my person because they were after my bike. If I ever get that iphone, though, I'll wrap it up in bubble wrap or something.

I have a waterproof, shockproof model simply because it does bounce around alot
i used to see so many cell phones/ cell phone shards on my 24 mile route, it was insane.
will definitely put it next to spare tire from now on, I had it in a "front" holder...and yes, I already washed my ipod shuffle clip, clipped to my clothes at the gym, and didn't get a new one to punish myself...:cool::cool: glad to hear that you've seen a many cell phone on the road, I thought I was uniquely idiotic...
i have a cheap and nasty pre-pay phone i carry with me on my bike - and leave my blackberry at home to avoid expensive incidents!!
Ya know, somehow after 4 years at T-Mobile I never once heard that story of phone death. All summer long it was guys jumping into pools with it in their pockets. One guy told me he dropped it in the potty on a Greyhound bus and it was all I could do not to puke. Phone goes in saddle bag, it's happy there.
My phone (and ID etc.) go in a ziploc bag, they'd be totally saturated otherwise.
There's no room in my seat pack, and even if there was I wouldn't put it there. I'd forget it for sure. Plus I think the cumulative impact from bouncing against my multi-tool or spare CO2 canister over bumpy roads would kill it faster than anything.
My long sleeve jerseys have a button or zipper for at least one of the pockets, but I think I'm going to have to start safety pinning my phone in my short sleeve jerseys.
