...a book that you got so into that you ended up staying up all night long reading just abruptly ends without wrapping everything up and there's not a sequel in sight??? GGGRRRR I hate that! This book was awesome until the end which didn't wrap up anything. Well, ok, it wrapped up one thing. But that's it. Okay, sorry just had to vent.

I read a book recently that was even worse. The character development was excellent, two people who had almost lost their chances at redemption and love find each other, and against all odds, start to develop a relationship. After a bit, including teaching a young kid (her student) to trust someone, he balks and runs off, she waits for him, sadly, slowly falling apart.
Because of a freak accident caused by the boy (her formerly loyal student) she dies. The lover comes back THEN, when it was most definitely too late. I was FURIOUS. (the book's in Italian, so none of you will ever encounter it, fortunately). Nothing like reading 350 pages to come to an ending that is such a rip off that you throw the book across the room.
Some screenwriter might pick it up and make it into a movie with a happy ending ...
This one was 491 pages! Grrr! You know, I kind of feel bad. Like I said, normally I would not bash a writer, especially a new writer, but I looked and this woman is not new, has several other books. I still don't want to be mean though. The premise of the story was really, really. I was so excited for the first half of the book. But somewhere, it's like she got lost in her own mystery. Initially she set it up well and I love the historical stuff, but really she put in too many subplots and "diversions" that she didn't seem really able to sew it all up. I don't know all the technical terms, I just know that there were like 6 subplots that were never resolved. Too many minor/major characters whose story wasn't finished. When I got to the end I actually screamed in frustration and started asking questions (aloud to no one). Like I said the premise was a good one, but she didn't execute it well at all in my opinion.Quote:

My biggest pet peeve is books that have rushed or inappropriate endings. I can put up with bad grammar or mediocre writing if the author has worked all the way through the end of the book. Often it seems that the author got bored or tired and just wrapped things up quickly to finish the book and be done with it.
I agree completely. Don't get me wrong, I love a really well put together book and I do get mightily ticked sometimes when the same grammatical errors are made over and over again throughout a book, but if the story is good I'll more than likely keep reading and be happy about it. My biggest pet peeve is when an author uses the word "prone" to describe anyone on flat on the floor. I always expect the person to be laying face down when in fact the person is on their back. I hate it worse when the writer can't either end the freakin' book OR edit himself (I don't know of any women writers who do that...). There are a couple of contemporary writers who come to mind who have series of 3 or 9 books going, each of which is in excess of 800 pages. WTF. I got maybe 100 pages into one of them and quit.Quote:

It's a book, you can go back and write in a little clue, lead in a "redemption" character. Deus ex is so annoying!

Darnit, I just finished another book with no ending. And a teaser for a sequel. To be released a year from now. Which I'm probably going to buy because the book was otherwise good. :mad::mad::mad:
