Anyone use a SRAM/Campy combo?

I normally wouldn't stray from an all-Campy set up, but I was really disappointed that they haven't come out with a sub-170 carbon crank arm in '09.

I think I'm going to swap out my current 170mm to a 165 or 167.5, and it looks like my only option is with SRAM Red. SRAM offers a 165mm crank (and are coming out with a 167.5 in September 08, according to my wrenches). Since they have a 110-bolt pattern I'm thinking I can slip them crank arms onto my Record chainring, thus maintaining the integrity of my Campy drivetrain.

However, I don't know anyone who has ever tried this set-up. Everyone I know rides all-Campy or all-Red. (I don't even know yet if I can purchase the arms separately from the crankset)

Has anyone ever used this sort of set-up... and is it even possible?

BTW... I saw the new 2009 Super Record this weekend. O. M. G. ...... :eek:

I have the same issue with Campy and I use Specialites TA Carmina. Works great with my Campy Record setup.

Don't know if you can change cranks, it would be great if you could.

If they're both 110 bcd it should work.

I don't believe you can just buy record cranks without the chainring.

I had a warranty-repair issue with a Campy crank, and they kept my old chain rings and just replaced the crank arms. So, at some level, they are available.

I think the Campy crank has one bolt not on the 110 mm circle, so you might have to modify the Campy chain rings if you want them to fit on a normal crank with all the bolts on the 110 mm circle.

Here's one reference that claims the Campy cranks models with the hidden 5th bolt have it on a 112 mm circle!

I had a chat with the LBS owner/wrenches today, and was told there would not be a problem boltng the shorter SRAM cranks onto my Record chainrings, I will just have to get the SRAM ceramic bearings to replace my old BB. That would the ideal situation, as it would keep my cassette-chainrings-chain all Campy.... Apparently, I am not the first to use this set-up among their customers.

The cost could be quite high, tho, as I would have to buy the entire SRAM Red crankset, as well as the ceramic bearings. The LBS owner is going to talk to SRAM directly (he says they're a great company to work with) and see if there is any way to get the crankarms-only. If not, I'm just going to have to unload the extra chain rings.

Anyway, looks like the issue will be resolved in a few months, just wanted to give you gals the FYI. ;)

I heard from my LBS that SRAM is coming out with the new version of Red this fall, maybe this month, so you may be able to get a deal on the crank arms once the new version is released....
