Praise for...cycling single

OK, sure I know there's lots to like about DH's and SO's. But c'mon there have got to be advantages to not having a u-haul pull up in the driveway ;-)

* don't have to explain bike purchases. I go to my LBS and hear "my ____ will kill me when s/he sees that I bought ____s". If I want ___s, can afford ____s I get ____s.

* don't have to check schedules, If I want to ride, I ride. Never have to blow a perfect cycling day because we have to be at her Mom's cousin's ex-co-workers baby shower.

* One bike prominently displayed on the dining room wall, the other's in the living room, room for a third....where? :cool: :rolleyes:

actually mine now have their Own room. Where I can check on them periodically, the cats play in amongst the tires and chains (I am NOT washing that grease off your back! ;) ), heck even the dogs go check on them for me! I'm thinking the third maybe needs to go in the bedroom? - against the first wall you see when you wake up in the morning? As for riding/running/hiking whatever single?? here here for the single life. Although there are days someone to come home to would be nice, there are too many mornings waking Up to someone could get really ugly and not having to plan my day around anyone but me - there's something to be said!!

That's what the dogs are for: keep the bikes in line!.....my bikes live in fear of having their tires bit! :D

Cycling single:

- if you happen to pedal up to a really cute other cyclist (name your gender) and spend a bit of time flirting them up, you can go home with no guilt

- if you happen to bring said cyclist home for a little "off the bike" exercise, you won't get shot

- no fighting over the TV remote (you want to watch the TDF, the live-in wants to watch old "Dallas" re-runs)

Single was great! I did single for 34 years.

Married is great too, not better and not worse.

The key for me was finding another bike ride-aholic who's stable is as large as mine. He never complains about my buying bike stuff and I don't complain about his either. Actually, right now he really wants to get me to get a Blur (!) which I will when we can afford it. Life is good.

And I still get to see lycra butts everytime I go out (my DH still has the best, oh what riding does for one's posterior) and he's not jealous so I don't worry about socializing with other dudes when I'm riding, either.

It's the baby boy that's changed the where and when I ride. I wouldn't trade him for all the rides in the world (but I can't wait til he can mountain bike with me).

Life is good. :D

Our son's 17 month old (English) cocker-boy, Riley, spends his days at our house (with his littermate a permanent resident of 'our' house as well as his mother, uncle and grandmother you can see why we affectionately call this 'Camp Cocker' :) )

Our carbon's who reside on a rack in our dining room as well as our 'other road bikes' who keep us in cycling shape on trainers in our downstairs family room all live in fear of Riley ... boy dog in and out of the house and dog pack still trying to push it to the limit and see if he can pull off a coup and become thee top dog and claiming his part of the territory as only a boy dog can ...

Biting the tires is not what they're concerned about ;)

I have done the married thing and am single right now. I have to say that I never,ever rode as a married. He wanted me home when he was home. I am now riding in rides and just bought a road bike(my very first one). All that to say this, if you have a SO or DH who supports and encourages your cycling then be sure and let them know you appreciate their support and encouragement especially if they are not riders. I found out life is too short to be controlled by someone who doesn't support you and the things you like. It is also too short to pass up an opportunity to tell the ones you love that you appreciate them.

Wait a minute...how'd we go from "cycling single" to "my hubby and I love to bike" ? ;-) don't you guys have your own threads? ;-)

Those of you in relationships with cyclists or with supportive non-riders may want to avert your eyes from this thread as there may be some occaisional crying in one's cytomax here.

I've even been you. Yep, been there, done that, got my half of the matching jersey set that I packed up when she dumped me. Got me back into riding and I'm thankful for that.

You're all invited to the pitty-party of course, but only if you bring really really good food....cookies!!!

I guess I am lucky. My hubby and I LOVE to bike. Both mountain and road. We plan our vacations around our cycling. We have been to Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, and northern California with both our bikes. We live in Washington and I bet we have been in every event this state has to offer. We belong to 3 bike clubs. Two mountain and one road bike club. We have friends that we cycle with, when we feel like we want company, but often times it's just the two of us. Our kids are both in college. One almost finished and one with two years to go. Once they are gone we are going to broaden our cycling adventures. Our first broadening experience we have in mind . . . Tuscany Italy the year our son graduates college. We want to do a bike tour through Italy that summer. The next summer we were thinking Spain . . . and so on. Biking has brought Joe and I closer and it's something we both share and love. We have already decided where we are going this summer. Winthrop and Leavenworth for some great mountain biking and back to Montana this July for some great long distance road riding and some epic mountain biking. Summer here we come! YIPPEE!!!!!

In fact I have a date today after work with my hubby. Before he left he said, "How about our 40 mile loop before dinner?" I replied, "It's a date!" I love the longer days, too! :)

We have been married 28 years (29 this October). Our first bikes were 3 speed raleighs we bought back in 1979! We have been cycling together for almost 30 years! We started just road biking and got into mountain in 1997. Fell in love with it too. We own a total of 9 bikes! LOL Now that's love!

Sue . . . happiest when I am on one of my bikes! :D

Edit here . . . math has never been my strong point. I have been married for 27 years. Will be 28 this October! Let's not rush the years! :p

I enjoy cycling with my two oldest sons who are taller than me and who cycle at my pace and are very encouraging (Great Mum, you can do it - I'll see you at the top of the hill)... and with my daughter on shorter rides... at the moment my babies and I bike around the paddocks together and thats fun too...

Cycling doesn't stop with a family, it just changes pace a little and the company gets even better

I get the best of both worlds. My SO lives 657 miles away. So, we ride together whenever we can, but for the most part, I ride alone. I shop alone. I surf bike forums alone! I let it slip that I just ordered MORE new jerseys, and he's threatened to search my house next time he's here, but I can always find a place to hide that cute new Anaconda ensemble (yes, jersey, shorts, AND knickers...)

Oh - two bikes are in my dining room, but Ashley (my main ride) sits in my living room/kitchen, right next to the tv, so I can always see how she's doing. I just bought her a trainer, so now instead of watching her while I watch TV, I'll be riding her while I watch TV!

Well, I think I might have almost the best of both worlds! I live alone, and my cycling pack consists mostly of men. They are very women-friendly and married or partnered. One designs human powered vehicles of many sorts--particularly recumbents and trikes, some of them are just so, well, darned cute, and another fixes cars, another is in medicine, another writes--so it is kind of like having a multiple personality boyfriend. And, I never worry about something going wrong with my bike on a ride. They have been just a wealth of information for someone who has not been riding that long. A bunch of us are riding a century this weekend and I have gotten a lot of good training rides and advice. I am so content living alone that sometimes I think I should want a partner, but wonder how much I really do, hmm.
