I guess sports is like life...
there are times to support one another in teamsmanship
and then there are times, where it is necessary to compete, but to compete on rules understood by everyone who plays fairly, no verbal abuse and to compete with grace. To win with grace and humility and to lose, but not be shattered.
But would agree that it is wrong to teach kids to be mean to the opposing side, "other" team.
Wow. That made me cry. Good for those girls.
Laura
Yeah, Wow. Play hard, play fair. Can we vote for them?
That's character! What grace they exhibited!
Dang, missed it.
Speaking of sportsmanship - apparently the NYT linked to a pirated YouTube video, which is why ESPN had it taken down???
How can there be such a thing as a pirated YouTube video???
Here's the video-

I love that story! I'm so proud of those young women, they prove competition doesn't have to mean the absence of compassion.
Thanks for the re-post, I just assumed the reason that the link on the NYT was "no longer available" was that the video had been taken down at ESPN's request. Shows what I get for assuming :p
But no, it's not redundant. YouTube is full of homemade and legally posted videos.
Great story, anyway!
don't know if its 'cause i played sports (soccer) in college and just had acl surgery, but MAN! this story makes me bawl! in a good way. :) good for those girls, such class. here's the ESPN article:
Snork... I had to wonder if it would have happened if a game were on the line... but yea ;) I had to 'splain why I was all choked up... so I emailed it out just so that my friends wouldn't email it to *me* anyway :rolleyes::rolleyes: yea, that's right ...
We competed in the Scavenger Hunt for Bike, Walk and Wheel Week tonight. We had something of the spirit of cooperation, partly because we kind of had 1st place in the bag (we borrowed a wheelchair to get 40 pts extra). One of the bonuses was a flier for some movie, and after finding the flier one of us suggested we tear down all the other fliers we found so the other teams wouldn't get it. We decided we couldn't do that, because of this story!
However when we found the name of some tree, we were quiet about it because another team was right there looking for the same clue.
