How bad is this going to hurt?

Well, I had a stupid crash on Saturday. I made a very slow U turn in gusty (35 MPH) winds. I blew over. My thumb hyperextended on the brake hood. I am having an avulsion fracture pinned on Thursday afternoon.(the thumb ligament popped off, pulling it's little piece of bone it is anchored to with it) Does anyone know approximately how bad I'll feel 24 hours later? I'm pretty tough(I rode 76 miles and 7000 ft of climbing with this injury) but it really wasn't so sore until I tried to go to sleep that night.My parents had planned to visit Friday and Sat night from the Bay Area, I just don't know how perky I'll feel. My first orthopedic injury since I broke my pinky finger in a water ballon fight at age 12! thanks for any input! Tokie

I had an avulsion fracture of my right second metatarsal and surgery to pin.

It was painful. I don't want to upset you. They say to stay ahead of the pain. don't turn down any pain management early on. I'm on my way out the door but I'll try to write more later. You wil be ok.....don't worry!

Thanks Silver! At least I won't have to walk on my surgery! I think the waiting is the hardest part for me. And I have my bike set up on the trainer with aero bars with arm rests, so when it stops throbbing, I can ride. Tokie

One of my teammates had this injury. She's not back riding with us yet but I am hopeful that she will be soon. Take care of yourself - don't worry too much. You can definitely get past this.

- just broke a somewhat bigger bone in Jan and "seem" to be ok. Pain meds early and often first 2 days then see how it goes....

Well, I got my pre-op telephone interview with my anesthesiologist today - and I work with him at my outpatient surgery, and I like him! I'm having a "Bier block" (local anesthesia of the arm using a tourniquet) and sedation, the surgery will last about 30 minutes, and the surgeon will put in a nerve block to my thumb at the end of surgery which should get me home in comfort. I do know to start my pain meds at the first twinge of pain or at bedtime, whichever comes first, then have my DH wake me on re-medication schedule to stay ahead of the pain. Am already "suffering" from endorphin withdrawals, and envying my teammate who is racing in the Sea Otter Classic this Friday! Mostly I am relieved to be getting it over, and looking forward to a month off of work, getting 8 hours of sleep at night, loving my 2 dogs more, beading, reading, and trying aqua aerobics at noon(when I am always at work). Must purchase cast cover for bathing and aqua aerobics. The accident finished off my already tweaked rear Rolf wheel, so it's just as well that I can't ride again 'til it's fixed too. And I put my aero bars on my trainer bike. Maybe time to buy some of those ECT DVDs. I wonder if you can rent those from Netflix? (just kidding) Thanks everyone! I'm so sorry! It really does throb, doesn't it? you'll be better soon, and like you said, be happy you can walk! ;)

no really, keep on those pain meds and the worst will be over soon.

Wow, right on schedule, at 36 hrs post op, the pain went away, I can smile again! Now it almost seems worth it for the month off of work....yesterday I wasn't so sure! I can walk and it doesn't throb! I am so relieved! Thanks everyone for words of kindness and empathy! :D Tokie
