You might start with looking at the website of the American Massage Therapy Association at www.amtamassage.org. In some states, including New York, they have to be licensed by the state. Even once you get past the credentials, you'll find that you may enjoy one person's style or manner more than anothers, so it may take some time to find the right one. Ask other people you know to get some recommendations.
As for what type of massage, that's harder to answer. What are you hoping to get out of it? Relaxation, relief from injury, strain or overuse, more energy? You can look up different types of massage on the Web. I personally enjoy deep tissue and Thai, but I have to admit that I haven't tried all the types that are available.
Thanks for the link and info. I guess what I am looking for is something to help with recovery. I tend to get very tight in the hips, back, and legs due to ITBS and other associated issues. My last Chiropractor recommended I start scheduling massage appointments.
If you get a referral from your chiropractor, your insurance may cover the massage. Also the chiropractor will be able to specify exactly what type of work they think would be beneficial.
Is there a school of massage in your area? If so, see if they have a student clinic. I utilize the local student clinic in my area and the young people do an outstanding job. They are a lot cheaper too!
Massage therapists in Canada are provincially regulated.
In British Columbia: http://www.health.gov.bc.ca/leg/noti...e_therapy.html
In Ontario if you go to the government web site www.gov.on.ca and type in "massage therapists", you will also find the info. for that jurisdiction.
