Update on the shoulder

Had to tell someone this,hehe!!

Alright, So I was scheduled for surgery tomorrow for my shoulder. The pain had gotten so bad that I have been off the bike for the past couple weeks, could only ride the trainer with no hands, any weight forward caused serious pain. The last time I rode was at a race and I pulled out of the crit about 4 laps in because of the pain(was racing with the 4/5 men and every corner I had to get up out of the saddle and it was just to much).


So Monday night I decided to go to yoga one last time, even if it hurt, because I wouldn't be able to go for a few months after the surgery. Low and behold I have been pain free ever since! Something must of released in yoga and let go of whatever was being impinged. I was pain free yesterday, but very skeptical so I didn't tell anyone. It continued today and I even went out and did about 27 miles this morning on the no drop ride put on by the LBS that I work at. I ended up being the person in the front the whole time who had to regulate the pace, it was fun:-)


So I am so excited, I am going to go to yoga religiously twice a week and when I get off the bike do shoulder stretches and get back into trainer. Hopefully I can be back into race shape in a month or so and finish out the season:-)

Wow!!! I'm so glad you went to yoga. And that you found a non-surgical alternative (always nice when there is one)!

That's great! Where did you find a yoga class? I keep thinking that'll help my various tight muscles...

No surgery fixes are always better. What did your Surgeon say? Yoga is bad for business?

Yeah the surgical coordinater for the ortho didn't seem to thrilled, oh well. I would rather not go through surgery unless I have to(also don't feel like shelling out all that money to find out that they didn't really need to go in there).

I also work at a small neighborhood gym while I am completing my bachelors(the same people own the LBS that I work at on the weekends) and we have an amazing yoga instructor(who went to worlds for short course DU a couple years ago) who comes twice a week for classes. Some classes, like monday, are focused almost exclusivly on stretching, while some days are focused on strength. There are also quite a few cyclist in the class, so we do a lot of stretches for the back,quads,it bands, and hamstrings- so it is the perfect class for an athlete, since she is a former endurance athlete herself!

ehirsh - sounds like you had a "joint derangement" which yoga cleared up for you! Hooray! If it comes back, don't despair. Do the yoga move that fixed you again (and if you can, do it every couple hours until you've been pain-free for a week and you can assume the boo-boo has healed completely) or find a McKenzie-trained physical therapist who can help you refine the motion that reduces your derangement.

Yay! Definitely a better option than surgery, and trust me when I say I know how happy you must feel! Keep up with the yoga, and good luck with the training (my first race is in 3 weeks :eek:).

That's great news! I have a hip issue that has been bothering me for years. Somehow, the other day, I moved (I was not doing yoga...TMI...:rolleyes:) and I heard and felt this THUD, and my hip has been amazingly pain free ever since.

So yoga works, and, um, so do other mind-body activities...;)

But back to the shoulder, I do have an old rotator cuff injury that has come back because I started doing some weight lifting and I did the butterfly-type machine, which I knew I shouldn't do, but I did it anyways. So now my shoulder hurts and that's why I opened up this thread. I have a century coming up and a trip to France with alot of cycling and I don't want my shoulder to hold me back. But I am going to do some yoga, since it's been months since I did it, and see what happens. It may or may not help my shoulder, but it'll have lots of other benefits.
