Triathlon books
My little sister has said that she is interested in doing a triathlon. Does anyone have a favourite book that they would recommend to give a first time triathlete? I have "training plans for multisport athletes" by Gale Bernhardt which I think is good and got me through my first tri, so I said she could borrow that. She's always been active but never done much competitive sport before.
Oh dear - my mother is not entirely pleased that I have got both sisters into triathlon now. I think my brother will resist.

I've read and keep re-reading "the woman triathlete" by Christina Gandolfo. Best birthday present I got this year.

I've read raving reviews for the Slow Fat Triathlete, even from non-slow, non-fat people. :)

books
I'm currently re-reading "Going Long" by Joe Friel & Gordon Byrn. Now that IMFL is on the table I need to figure out how I'm going to get it done.
Sally Edwards has some good books for women too, "The Complete Book of Triathlons" and "Triathlons for Women."

Thanks, that has given me some good ideas.

Joe Friel, The Triathlon Training Bible; covers everything from pure beginner to setting up a training plan for elite racers at all distances. And...as a gift package, the book plus a membership to a local triathlon club would be a great combo :)

I second the recommendation for the Christina Gandolfo book, The Woman Triathlete. It covers all basics of triathlon from equipment to training cycle, and also has plans for every major race distance from Sprint to IM. The Sprint and Olympic plans have beginner and advanced versions.
Lots of inspirational stories from pro women triathletes too.
I lent my copy to a good friend when we were training for IM AZ, and she used it so much she gave me a coupon to Amazon.com to replace it!
Going Long is my favorite tri book b/c I am in the IM phase now. It is awesome but definitely not for a beginner and the workout durations will be intimidating for someone not training for IM.
I like Joe Friel's Triathlon Bible but it is an intimidating book, in my opinion.
Best of luck,
Laura
