And for me it was my longest ride ever at 25.3 miles! :)
My longest ride since 1993, 78.6 with over 4500 feet of climbing :) Did anyone else here do the Knox County (Ohio) Bicycle Challenge?
Tackled a club century today. It was a beautiful day to be on a bike in southern Indiana. The skies were clear, temps started in the mid 70's and climbed into the low 90's by the end of the ride. We did have to fight a slight headwind on and off throughout the day. I fell in with a of guys (I was a rose amongst many thorns :D ) and the pace was fast all day long. At about the 60 mile mark my average speed was 18 mph  and I knew it probably would not stand but heck I was pretty darn proud at that point. The last 30 miles of the route consisted of a lot of climbs and so the average speed took a tumble. However, at the end I was still beaming for I posted my fastest century yet - 99.7 miles, 5 hours and 39 minutes on the bike and drum roll please........... an average speed of 17.66 mph.
Makbike - um....wow! Remind me to be Very Scared if I ever ride with you :D
no riding here, am at work. Woke up too late to do much of anything except get dressed :o
I did something today that I haven't done in a loooong time. I went for a ride with DH. Just the two of us. On one of our old favorite routes - the Triathalon Loop (we name all our routes) up into Howard County. It was really nice to be out, just the two of us.
We did 42 miles @ 16.4, just shy of 2400' climbing. It was mostly cloudy, surprisingly humid, and warm (high 70s, low 80s). And today is the last day of summer, isn't it?
I rode 50.88 (how do you calculate climing ft?) at a leisurely 15mph. I forgot one very very important ingredient in my ride today... sunscreen! OMG! I am cooked. I wasn't wearing my gloves today either, so... gag.. When was the last time you krispy krittered your hands??!! Sheesh. I feel like a real nerdlette...forgetting my sunscreen. DUH!
Shoulders forearms and hands... ouch. Guess I'll be forced to wear sleeves and gloves tomorrow for sure!
I have a club century next Saturday and I'm not ready for it... They say its pretty flat (hope so!), but its so hilly around here, I kinda feel like they're saying "it's all downhill from here". (you know that old lie!)
P.S. Makbike - I aspire to be that fast for that kind of distance, gf!!!
I've near done it for our hilly Wednesday night 32mile ride....but a century???
< bowing and saying "i'm not worthy i'm not worthy!!" >
;) ;)
WTG Mak. You rock.
I had a great 45 mile ride yesterday at avg of 17mph, but dang I wanted to go for more... what a fun ride!! Low winds, no clouds, beautiful day!
so here I sit Sunday morning and I am SOOOOOOOOOOO going to do 60+ today. It's beautiful in Chicago this weekend... and I am jonezin for a really really long ride! So hopefully the group will want to ride further... if not, I might be out for an additional 40 alone... but that's okay... I think I know how to change my own flat:eek:
My 124 miler turned into 100, but that's okay. It was not fun after about 90  . We did the Copper Country Color Tour (small college-student organized tour).
We had wild storms and wild winds Friday/Friday night (60mph gusts were forecast for that night, but I don't know what we actually got). It was still whippin' at my house in the morning. :( We decided to stash a vehicle at a convenient spot, just in case the winds sucked too much strength out of us. It was still in the 20-25mph range, gusting into the 30s for most of the way. The first 64 miles or so were great, because it was a tailwind! The next 35 not so much - we turned into the wind, along Lake Superior. It was only really bad in a few sections, but by about 90 DH and I were both toast. The non-existent 4th food stop was not appreciated, but I'd carried enough emergency stores to get by. We did WAY more stopping than I'd planned, as we were riding with a guy who was in a perpetual sprint-bonk-sprint-bonk-bonk-sprint-bonk-bonk-bonk... cycle (note the increasing proportions of bonking), beginning around 40 miles. He finally called his wife to come and get him at 87 (he rocked, really - suffering all that way still smiling, and still plugging along), so I figured we'd still be able to finish the whole thing. About 10 miles later we both decided to use the stashed car - feeling really bad. DH's computer read 100.5 or something when we got there, but mine was just at 99.6, so I had to ride around enough to get to 100. Yeah, I'm like that.
I'm glad we stopped at 100, because I'm having some knee pain now, which scares me. And a cold. I do have a certain "I'm a quitter" feeling, though, helped only by the number of people who stopped at the 1/2 way point.
It was an absolutely beautiful day yesterday! Wind not included, of course. The sun was shining (after the greyest, yuckiest day I've ever seen, on Friday), the colors were great, the temp started at about 50 at 8am, and got up to (I think) 63. I'm really glad I did it - once DH is ready to even think about it, I want to plan to do the whole thing next summer (maybe not the partially-supported, unmarked, sagged until the 1/2way point version).
Happy Fall, everybody! :)
