How to get new bike stuff for practically free

Heres my evil plan. I give DH (Comuter only) and the kids my old stuff and buy new for Mommy.

Yesterday my 9 year old, who just loves stuff --- his team Discovery hat, lycra bike shorts etc. --- said he needs an odometer for his bike. Volia - kid get old odometer and Mom gets one with cadence meter. Everyone is happy!

Also gave DH old helmet and got a spiffy new Bell.

What else do they need I wonder? Maybe a nice woman specific Specialized Dolce Elite, so Mommy can have a Cervélo ? ;) Ok Maybe I'm going to far...

But first I'd have to get a kid and a husband. Not worth the trade off for me.

I tried that with my son. He could ride the cannondale cyclocross (he's growing) and I'd get a new carbon road bike. Nobody fell for it though.

A few years ago I wanted to get a really nice digital scale. One that I could feel reasonably confident was correct. Didn't have money spend on such a luxury at the time, but wanted it bad to help motivate me to lose weight. I decided to put on my sister's brain, cause her brain always devises a beautiful plan to get what it wants. After doing so, I came up with the brilliant plan of taking back the telescope I got for Dh for Christmas, which he had been planning on exchanging because it had some issue ... but months after Christmas it was still sitting there. So, with his permission, I took back the telescope, got the awesome scale and DID lose the weight, thank you very much. And Dh got something out of the deal, too. He got on the scale and freaked himself out at what it said ... and finally lost HIS weight (about 50 pounds), then got way into running and cycling and is now an exercising triathaloning freak of nature. And a babe, too. ;)

So, really, it was my Christmas gift to HIM! (Well, me too. :)) I love it when a plan comes together!

Yep, bklyn, you're on to something! But don't get too comfortable and extend it into other parts of life...

SilverDaughter (who is now 17) wanted a Jeep when she turned 16. Mr. Silver says "No Grades, No Jeep...You get Mr. Silver's old Lexus" - a fate worse than death to SilverDaughter:( :(

Time comes around, and I'm rubbing my hands, salivating over the new car I'm going to get when SilverDaughter gets my old car...THEN, I called the insurance company...:p

Insuring her in my OLD (I drive them 'til they fall apart) Lexus was 4x the cost of insuring her in the Jeep:eek:

So, SilverDaughter now drives a Jeep, and Mr. Silver still drives an OLD Lexus

The moral: Don't get too comfortable giving away the old and getting yourself new...;)
