New Pedal Now On
Gave up trying to get the R540 off. Took bike to our nearest LBS (not where I bought the bike - this LBS is about 1 mile from my house and they specialise in Giant). Bought pedal wrench from them yesterday as my LBS were out of stock. Mechanic tried a couple of times to get the stubborn pedal off and said it was a toughie. He then positioned the pedal wrench, straddled the bike and gave a good downward thrust with his foot. The spanner flew up, whacked him on the shin (ouch), he grinned said "That shifted it:D " and off came the pedal. He reckoned it was just a very tight fit. He put the other pedal on so now my bike has matching pedals again:D
While I was there I put a deposit on a kiddies bike for my Grandson. The LBS I normally use doesn't stock kiddies bikes, only teenager upwards.
Later on in the week I'm going back with the car as they have bike carriers in stock at a reasonable price and I'm going up to see my friend (300 miles away) for the weekend in a couple of week's time. She's recently taken up cycling but got a mountain bike and she's finding it too heavy as she's got arthritis. She hasn't got much money to spare at the moment so she asked me if I could look for a bike for her similar to my Raleigh then she could let her husband ride the mountain bike. I may have found a bike for her (needs a bit of work done) so if I get it that'll be a nice bike to do some restoration work on. Be nice to go out cycling with her (my bike's going too).
As for the R540 pedals my son wants to try them. I think he'll get on better with them than I did.

So what kind of pedals are you using now? Did you give up on clipless pedals?
-
No Lisa I haven't given up on clipless pedals. I've now got Shimano PD540s like these except they have reflector plates on one side which double as a platform so any shoe will do;) LBS had Specialized Sonoma shoes reduced from £50 (about $100) to £40 ($80) and with discount I got them for £20 ($40):D My road shoes are fine on these pedals too but I prefer the Sonomas because I can walk on them.
I haven't tried out the new pedals yet but don't think I'll have a problem with them as they are very easy to clip in and out of.
These are the pedals.
