I did it! And no eyes were scratched out in the process

I successfully managed to give my sick 13yr old kitty, Erin, her IV sub-Q. Timing probably wasn't as her Vet planned. But I managed to stick her, and get some much needed fluids in.

She's had some chronic problems, but has lost WAY too much weight, now down to 6.2 pounds, from her nomal of 8.5. Last night she woke me throwing up - fortunately on the floor. :( So after I cleaned the mess, I decided getting extra fluids would help her feel better than waiting until morning for her scheduled dose.

This morning she ate some breakfast. Hopefully she'll keep that down.

what a beautiful photo of a lovely kitty. I hope your sub-cute water helps her live a nice long life. I have heard that sometimes this stuff will go into remission once you get them back on their feet. good luck

What a sweet girl.

I used to give my cat Echo a sub-Q twice a day when she was in the latter stages of kidney failure. She always hated getting them, but they really helped her. Hope Erin is feeling better today.

That's a great photo. I hope the sub-Q helps her get through this rough spot and live a long kitty life.

Good for you! Not easy. We've been giving our 17 year old Siamese cat Beeper subq twice a week since October, and it's keeping her kidneys (polycystic kidney disease) stable so far. She hates it, but it's quick. Sometimes they throw up after subq--our vet thinks it's because of some momentary vascular response to getting fluid--and that kind of throwing up is not something to worry about, she says. Anyway, the subq really does help.

What a pretty baby.

I had a kitty that I gave insulin shots to every day. She was so funny. If I was running late, she would come and get me. When I was on time, she would run. I think she just thought it was funny. The injections never seemed to bother her at all.

I hope Erin gets to feeling better soon.

Sorry you had to do it, but I'm sure she'll feel so much better now that you did! I'm sure she's grateful to have such a nice mom to take care of her!

I've had to do that... I didn't ever really get used to it but I could see the difference it made. Good on you !!!

Her Vet doesn't quite know what's wrong. Erin has had chronic sinusitis, but it has never affected her intestinal tract before. She's had lab work twice (2 weeks apart) & x-rays, but Dr. E isn't sure. No masses on the x-rays, labs were normal except for an elevated white blood cell count. I think her current sinus infection is secondary to whatever is wrong. Anyway, she didn't improve, so is on a second round of antibiotics, and now the IV fluids.

When I came back today from running errands, she was up and around, wanting to go out to warm up. No evidence in the house of lossing her breakfast, which is a good thing :) Erin was born in Phoenix, and likes to be WARM. Since she doesn't go far, she's allowed outside eventhough she's sick.

Hopefully she'll have a quiet night as I'm supposed to do a MS training ride (43 miles) tomorrow morning.

Bmmccasland: Hi: Glad your kitty is doing okay. We are having fun times with our old 21 year old cat. He had a mass (non-cancerous) removed from his neck/back area (with only a local) last week. He never even flinched while they did the surgery, but now we are doing all the fun things - like giving him antibiotics which make him sick, and putting coverings on his back foot so he can not scratch his wound and tear the staples out! It is a challenge to get a bandage to stay on that rear foot!!! He hates it real bad and every night he has managed to get it loose or off! What a little brat.

We love him anyway.

Oh, and in response to your post about riding on the San Francisco Peaks. I did exactly that on Saturday. Went up there for 5 hours (which included riding home through town too). It really helped clear the head. It is so beautiful up there. I went up into the ferns and aspens so green and lush right now
