New (Used) Rider
Howdy,
I started riding in April to get back in shape, on a used (given to me) hybrid which is probably the nicest bike I've ever owned. I grew up in a town where one biked everywhere - and usually did it on a ca. 1950's Schwinn or equally heavy, basket-laden old chrome cruncher. Now I live in a remote area with hills - and keep surprising myself.
I love it.
I look forward to reading more here about upping the riding gear (when do you go from thrift-shop cotton shorts and Wal-mart tank tops to cool neoprene biking gear? When to take this seriously?) and getting a better bike, eventually. Meantime, I'm just digging the new muscle and feeling of wellness.
I'm in Southern New England, by the way.
Hi to all!

Congrats on finding an old love! What a good feeling!
For me, in my mind I planned on switching to bike shorts when I lost x amount of weight. Then realization set in. The more I bike, the more I eat, so I don't really loose any weight, but I sure do feel sooo much better! Since I realized this, I switched when I just got tired of the sore tush and wanted the padded shorts. :D I have a pair of the baggy ones as well as the others and depending on my mood, I decide which ones I feel like wearing in public.
Good luck!

for me, it was when i found something I liked on sale for a steal!

Welcome to the board and back to cycling! :D
I'm sure you'll switch to all the latest riding gear as it seems like you're ready for it and/or you find deals and/or you have the money to do so.
Good luck with your riding! :)

Thank you for the warm welcome!
We did (myself and Mister indigoiis) an 18 mile ride with hills last night. He really pushes me - in a good way - just by riding alongside or up ahead. I don't want to look like a wimp. Anyhow, he noticed my form and said I could probably use toe clips, a new seat, and proper shorts. So we're going shopping. Yay! The bike also needs a tune up, so we'll see...
