Riding in the 'Hood

Well, this isn't exciting, but I thought I'd post a few pics of my neighborhood where I do so much riding. I've figured out various loops of 2 to 4 miles, or I incorporate those loops into other rides.

This wide street is actually a bike route -- about 2-3 miles of it are through this shady residential neighborhood.

As I said -- not exciting, but that's the 'hood!

Wow, that is beautiful, it is sooo nice to see green!! Here in New Mexico we don't see much. That is a beautiful route though!

Nice pictures! Now I can imagine where you are riding. Those trees look lovely to ride under.

Right about where the Burke Gilman links up with the Sammamish. Kinda Kenmore-ish. The bridge is at Bothell Landing.

This is an abandoned off-shoot of the very popular bike trail by our house, although it took a beating recently when it was used as a trail detour for a long time. It's not any fun on a road bike because it's not maintained any more, but it's fine on my mixte (sprung saddle, fatter tires). We picnic here by the river a lot.

These photos are more exciting than they look, too, because about five minutes after we took them some kids came up and told us that there was a body in the river right below us. No foul play, just an elderly woman and a very sad story, but we haven't done much picnicking there ever since.

To find trees in the Dallas area you have to be in the older neighborhoods and/or down near creeks. The newer the area, the flatter and smaller the trees. Developers tend to wipe out everything and build. Or else build on farmland that didn't have trees to begin with. I refuse to have a new house for that very reason.

Xeney, that's a really nice trail and picnic spot. Hopefully you'll be able to replace the bad memories with good ones, but man, that's a rude turn of events.

Those pics are making it very hard to sit in a classroom today. My, how I love the trees and beautiful spots in your pics. I miss trees-shrubs living in the plains state. Pooks, your hangout looks very inviting, especially on warm days.

I'm doing fine! Just hit the third trimester as of today, and I'm due the first week in August. I've gained thirteen pounds, all belly, and my feet hurt sometimes, but otherwise I'm good. Just passed my three-hour glucose test and the baby kicks me all the time.

I haven't ridden in a long time, though. I got nervous about riding alone after my balance got wonky, and my husband is in a new riding club so he never has time to go on slow boring rides with me anyway. I probably should stop hanging out here because I suspect I will not be riding again for years, but I like to pretend that I will someday use my bike again.

I thought this was a fun thread, Pooks, and that when I was out by myself, I'd stop and take pix today. DH doesn't have much patience for that!

The first one is standing on the bridge he claims is the start point of "my" hill. I figure, it's MY hill, and I should be deciding where the start point is -- it's REALLY where you see that school bus in the distance!

The second one is the bird I saw when I got to the top. I was hoping for some raptors, since the climb is up to the World Center for Birds of Prey. It's a Grouse. Disappointing, huh? The closest thing I saw to a bird of prey today was a military helicopter. (link to the center: http://www.peregrinefund.org/world_center.asp )

Next comes looking off the left hand side of the road -- as I'm about to head back down, and then looking off the right hand side. DH would be so proud of me, stopping to take pictures right by that "no stopping" sign!

And the last picture -- my husband's favorite: you going to collect pictures of these now? want to go up Bogus Basin Road to take a picture of that one? He calls them "cattle grates" and yes, that's REALLY what it is. My new name for them? "Butt Ups!"

Now if I only knew how you ladies space the pictures in between the descriptives!
