I finally rode my bike to work- now given the distance, I am embarrassed to tell you that it took me 3 yrs to get my act together but I am really really happy I did:)
It only took me 8 minutes zipping straight down hill- I was frozen when I arrived since it was still below zero ( celcius).
It did take me 16 minutes to get home, heart rate was definitely up there by the time I wound up the hill. ( Not frozen when I arrived home!)
Nice thing is- it is so close I can just wear my normal clothes so it is really hassle free so I know I will do it again!
Yippee:) I am a commuter now:)

It's been raining here so I haven't been able to get out. I'm glad you can wear regular clothes to commute it, it must be nice!

I think I've mentioned before that I'm too close to work (2.5km) to ride for my commute, so I usually walk, but it sounds like your distance is so nice that you can make your ride home into something fun, too!

Congratulations! I think the first ride is the hardest and from then on it's easy, as you know you can do it. A good kick-start for the working day.

Have just begun riding to work again myself. 3 days running! I only have a 2.5 km one way trip, and as I'm usually cutting it pretty fine in the mornings, I have been going home the long way and clocking up 7.5 km each day. It will all add up. Keep pedalling!

Pika, I am right behind you. I found out about bike lockers at some of the railroad stations last year and this year finally rented one in the next town as my town does not have any. As soon as it is lighter in the morning when I leave I will also be commuting at least to the train station. However like you, it is not very far, just 3 miles, but I am excited to consider myself a commuter anyway, not just a commuter by train.

PS...I also can just wear my regular clothes :)

congratulations on finally taking the commuting plunge. Sounds like you have a similar type of commute to what I had when I was in high school. Took me 7 minutes to get to school in the morning, 30 to get home in the afternoon.

Now I commute a total of 2.5 miles each way from the train station to my office and I think it counts! And when you are feeling like you want a longer commute after work, just take a detour on your way home and because you are on your way home you don't need to worry about looking sweaty at work. That's what I do anyway. The hard part is not to skip out of work early when I have a bike ride planned.

That's awesome. I'm soooooooo proud of you. I had about the same commute in Edmonton. Minus the hills of course. I loved it. I got so addicted to my morning commute that I just kept doing it, even in the middle of winter when it was minus 15 to 20 Celcius. It got too hard to kept my eyewear fog free below minus 20.

With a short commute like that, you might be looking for a longer route home. It sounds like it wouldn't take much more time.

Yeah...the first ride is always the hardest.
With better weather and more light approaching, it should be easier to make it part of your routine.
(Wahine, those are some crazy temps! The coldest I've ever ridden to work in was -7 C, and I thought that was crazy!)

I haven't had a chance to commute much this year... and its almost winter, but my partner has just bought me some nice warm booties, so I guess I have no excuse when the winter commute opportunities arise.
