Does anyone have an opinion on Joe Friel's Training Bible? Or can you suggest another training method/book? Also, how about a good cycle maintenance/repair manual?

I love Park Tool's Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair. Lots of pictures and very clear instructions.

I secon the Park tool rec.
I don't have the Cyclist's Training Bible, but I do have the Triathlete's. I love it. It is my guide. I think it's a great book for the money.
Friel's Cyclists Training Bible is a great book to start with. There's a ton of really good information in there to help understand how to train as well as set up your own training schedule. I def recommend it.
The Training Bible is good, but if your really serious I'd look in to Coggan's Training and Racing with a Power Meter.
Yep, the Training Bible it is. My DBF swears by it - a great resource all in one volume. You will probably want to supplement it with another more beginner-oriented book or two (the New Cyclist's Handbook is pretty good as is Bicycling Medicine [?]), but the CTB is definitely a keeper.
Enjoy!
