New Biker with a good deal of problems. Hoping to ride the PMC

I was going to use my fathers bike, who is not much bigger than me in the upcoming PMC (Pan Mass Challenge) this summer. However, my arms aren't long enough.

So i need to find a bike soon. And was wondering if you guys could recommend good quality bikes for low prices? or maybe where i could find good used bikes. :confused: i'm new to the world of cycling but really want to be involved this year. However, i dont want a cheap bike. (83 miles in a day needs some decent mechanics behind it.

Any input would be amazing.

You could try putting a shorter-reach stem on your dad's bike, if it fits you elsewhere just fine.

Otherwise my first recommendation would be to go to a local bike shop that sells used bikes, tell them what you need the bike for and your price range, and let them pick a few for you to try.

I agree with KnottedYet regarding the shorter reach stem change if that's enough to fit you. I would also definitely recommend that you bring the bike in to your local bike shop and make sure it's fitted to you so that you don't end up with knee, back or arm pain, especially on long rides.

Other good, fairly inexpensive newer frames made for women are in the Giant line - ie, Giant OCR3 road bike. It runs about 600.00 - you didn't say what your price range was so it's hard to say.

Also, I agree with Knottedyet's idea about checking with the LBS about a used road bike if a new one is out of range. There are some good bikes to be bought that way - but I wouldn't buy one privately or you may not know if there's something really wrong with it (Your LBS would know).

Another time-trusted choice is the Trek 1000 (and 1100 and 1200...). For an entry bike, it's fairly okay, or so do I hear.

try with e-bay,there are a lot of good bicycle and u can watch auction and buy great bike for low price.as i am from serbia(europe) i can not do this because shiping and pay pal protocol are problem.u can also buy frame and other parts indipendetly and make your own bike that suits u most in size,gear and look.

Have you checked craigslist.org, usually get good deals there. Bought my Trek 2200 WSD for $400 and it fits and runs perfect, she must ave been the same size as me.
Check often, stay away from the shady deals, and creeps, when it is good jump on it quick. Always, use caution and the buddy system when making purchases from strangers, meeting in public.

Belmont Wheelworks has an excellent used bike store next door to the regular store. Lots to choose from. I would go there and TRY some of the bikes before buying on line.

If you are in the Boston area, you might also try the Broadway Bicycle School for good used bikes.
