My Dog Ate It

Literally. I treated myself to a new pair of Pearl Izumi sugar knickers yesterday. Oh so comfy! I went out for a ride, the last 1/4 of which was all in the rain, and enjoyed my new cycling knickers and the miles. I came home and took a shower to get cleaned up, leaving my very wet clothes on the bath rug. After relaxing with some hot cocoa, I went back in to check on the clothes...only to find that my dog had decided the chamois on my new knickers would be a good snack.

I have 3 holes in the chamois. Nothing huge, but one is large enough that I worry the stuffing will come through in the wash, or even after much wear. They need to be washed since they are still wet and have a fair amount of kicked up dirt and street grime from the ride.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? Can you sew the chamois part? Are there any chamois patch kits (so to speak)?

I have no idea how to help you! I just wanted to say I've been there....mine use to eat gloves, socks, insoles from shoes....anything that was stinky! I still think it's him FIRST when I lose a glove! I'm so sorry yours got you! Hope someone here has a solution!

Just don't wash them, whatever you do. You could rinse them out in the sink if you kept the holes all bunched up in your hand.

Then I'd find someoen with a serger and have a piece of flannel or something sewn over the whole chamois.

Sorry about your shorts and chamois. I've not worked with them and none of my shorts have them so I don't know what to tell you to do.:(

If so, see if your card provides purchase protection! This advise was give to me on this very board about this time last year when my brand new Sugar knickers were trashed in a crash. I had ordered mine online with my AmEx and sure enough, they have that type of program and reimbursed me, no questions asked!

Well, I know know whose cats you are talking about. Cats destroy things just as much as dogs, and usually in a terrible way. They also throw up. I had both, but I am sticking with dogs

Anyway, back to the topic. You will have to hand wash them as long as you can stand it. Patching the fabric is not a good idea. You may risk rubbing, and other unpleasant results. Just think that your dog approves of a purchase, that's why she ate you knickers. Don't scold the poor thing, it has no idea what happened. They smelled like you and she simply expressed her love this way. It may hurt to hear this, but you may need a new pair.

Oooooh, man....I've lost about 3 pairs of shorts this way. My Mayah (dearest doggie) knows it's wrong, but does it anyway. So I just make sure now that I keep all of my cycling stuff out of reach of her jowls.

She's also chewed a semi-new pair of Carnac road shoes. THAT she nearly lost her life for (no, not really....she just REEEEEALLY was in trouble that time). So, needless to say, my still-intact Sidi's are kept well away.

Dogs....they chew, but still we love them.

How do I know this will happen?? Luckily not from experience with expensive bike shorts, but from experience with Fruit of the Loom.

May be TMI but I certainly can relate to your love of the furry kind in letting them live.

I emailed the guy. Their chamois pads are unisex and they repair chamois'/shorts from both men and women.

I'm going to wear my dog-eaten knickers for a short bit longer. I figure they will be officially dead after another wash. Then, I'll send them in here to get a new chamois. I just can't bring myself to throw away a completely new pair of cycling knickers.

I wanted to post this site just in case anyone finds themselves in a similar situation. Also, it looks like these guys repair several cycling-specific issues (chamois, zippers, etc).

Looks like a neat operation. Mildly surprised they need to state to only send clean shorts. :eek:

Geez, I was sure hoping someone would throw out a double dog dare. Seemed kinda' fitting considering the topic and all.

I have a jacket I got from these guys at the Great Western Bike Rally over Memorial Day weekend this year. Great product. I wear it if it's windy or cool outside. It breathes.......!!!!

PKQ and BikeMomma - I soooooo would love to take you up on that dare, but here is how it would go. And I will use my latest as an example.

I have stressed to my DH to close his sock drawer so that Zeus, our boxer, won't pull his socks out and eat them. After 4 months of this falling on deaf ears and me closing the drawer for my simple task challenged hubby, I decided to leave it in the hands of fate.

Well Zeus didn't let me down. About 10 pair of socks strewn about the kitchen and back yard. Some just mildly wet with slobber, and others encased in sand (I'm sure some are buried and he is saving those for a day when my house is expecially clean).

So my hubby waits me out. And after two days of him not the least bit bothered about the thought of wearing the same pair of socks twice in a row, I can't take it anymore and pick up after my dog.

So - to make a long story short and get to my point - my hubby KNOWS I can't leave the Pearl Izumi's lay. No matter how much I may want to, my analism and neatfreak tendenancies wear me down WAYYY before he would ever pick them up..................
