I made a few bikes go tiiiiiiimber on the displays because I am short! That was embarrassing especially in front of a few customers. I'm still trying to figure it out haha.
I'm still learning. I've volunteered at a few bike shops before but this is totally different because people need you to walk them through everything.
Job isn't commission based so I don't have to sell anything. When I volunteered at the bike shop most of the kids already knew what they wanted and we had pretty simple stuff...it was a community bike shop with mostly refurbished parts.
The shop I work at now sells mostly Trek, Del Sols, Dahons, Masi and bmx bikes (which i know nothing about).

Does anyone have any tips? I'm definitely not a fast learner.

This year, I signed up for my first RAGBRAI (so excited!), but now I'm unexpectedly (but happily) pregnant. I will be in my 14th week the week of RAGBRAI. Am I crazy for thinking that I can still do it?

Most of the days' rides are about 50 miles (one day is 84 miles). I've been training for it since January, so it will just be a matter of staying consistent with my riding over the next 2 months to maintain my fitness. I'll drink lots of water, go slower if I need to, and stay out of the noon-time sun if it's really hot. Does this sound reasonable, or am I deluding myself?

Hi everyone:

I have a new road bike and I've been riding for two months, on weekends, in good weather. Question: All the books say to clean and lube your chain. OK, I ran out to get the chain cleaner and the lube from my LBS. I have J-cloths. And yet I'm so scared that I'll do something wrong and mess up my good ride that I don't dare touch my chain. What if I over-lube? Under-clean? Wreck my chain? Oh my, the tales of woe that run through my head are endless! The one thing I do know is that for both cleaning and lubing I run the wheels backwards. They showed me that much at the store.

Any experienced riders out there with advice on chain management for a newbie? Thank you very much!

I am doing the Memorial Day Murph, a Crossfit military charity fundraiser on Saturday. Note - for those who follow that link I am NOT doing it with a weight vest - although I know a few others competing will be (it is a simple friendly competition for time). I already know that I will be one of the last finishers because I am very bad at running...

This morning I hit the track at my gym and ran 1 mile to see what it felt like. I've never actually run that far off the treadmill - I know that is sad but there it is. I figure those metal frames with two wheels are better for covering distance :)

As I approached the half-mile mark I noted that one of my hands was going numb and tingly. Probably some nerve compression, so I started trying to swing my arms a bit more to see if that helped. Not really...but it didn't get worse. Is there anything else I can do to decrease that? I just don't want to start the meat of the workout with an arm that is already complaining from running. I don't care so much what it feels like at the end when I've run the finishing mile... If it becomes TOO uncomfortable then I will mix it up with some fitness walking, but I would like to run the entire distance if I can - slowly perhaps - but at least jogging speed.

Hi all -
Here in the UK we ought to be turning our thoughts to summer, but have hardly had Spring yet! :( Ok, I've decided, I'll do my bit to make the sun come out by starting to think what bike I might buy before the real winter kicks in again...

So what I want to ask is have any of you suggestions for a bike which is:-

Light in weight (i.e. something I can lift without doing in my back/neck etc)
Suitable mostly for roads and occasional cycle or muddy/stony farm tracks (not heavy-duty MTB sort of stuff)
Suitable gears for hills
Speedy enough to keep up with the 10-14mph average cycle club weekend rides (I'm 62, non-competitive, average fitness)
Relaxed geometry for comfortable hours
Will take mudguards
Fit an average-built 5'4", 29" inside-legged woman
Happy with either drops or flat-bars
...ummm, I think that's it!

As you can see from my signature, I've got a wonderful Ruby for when the roads aren't covered in farmyard muck/ice and a hybrid which is OK for shopping but too heavy for me to lift... so this fantasy bike would hopefully allow me to get out on more yucky days.

I've heard that Specialized are tending to adapt their Tricross more towards a comfortable geometry rather than focussing it on CX competition... Does anyone have one and have useful thoughts about that? What experience of other bikes that could fit the bill might anyone have? Any suggestions gratefully received.

If getting a winter bike doesn't instantly bring on a summer of glorious heat-wave then nothing will!!

Cheers

We've had a Dr. Who thread. Since Orphan Black follows Dr. Who on the Space channel I was wondering if anyone else is watching it? It's one of the more imaginative new shows on the Space channel, which has been going downhill a bit lately. (Endless re-runs of Stargate and ... Castle??? Castle is a science fiction show?)

It's a BBC America production, filmed in Toronto, with a lot of Canadian actors. So, if you have BBC America, you might get it.

It's getting exiting, although there are few plot holes. Having grown up in a neighbourhood with a lot of immigrants, I find it hard to believe that Felix and Sarah would still have such strong English accents if they'd been brought to North America as children. Their gardian, yes, but kids lose their accents very quickly. Still, I suppose it's the only way to distinguish between a lot of characters played by just one actress.
