Recommend a pair of sandals that are comfortable to walk in and not TOO casual?

As the subject says, I'm looking for a pair of sandals that are very comfortable/easy to walk in but not as casual as Keens, Tevas, and that ilk for going out to nicer places (not super fancy but not pizza either).

For instance, we're going out to a nice, semi-dressy (their website says "casual smart") restaurant tonight that is 1/2 mile from the place we're house-sitting. We love to walk and are living as car-lite as we can for now, but the sandals I have that don't kill my feet are clunky and not feminine. I used to have some black leather sandals that would fit the bill just fine (can't even remember the brand, maybe Naturalizer?), but they finally fell apart b/c I wore them so much!

My problem is that I have narrow, low-volume feet (measure a 7A, but since you can't find A, I need a B/medium that runs narrow). This makes it hard to find shoes that fit as so many are cut too wide or too high-volume.

They don't have to have heels, but if they're flat, they need to have at least a bit of cushiness and support for walking. I won't be walking marathons in them, but more than just from car to restaurant and back.

Any recommendations of something I should take a look at/try on that might fit the bill? I buy shoes infrequently and don't have many pairs so am not familiar with that many different brands/styles.

Thanks so much!

We can't go a month without a thread, can we?

Is it just me, or is everyone else kind of running, but not having much heart to talk about it? The magazines and race series and LRS's have been all running-life-must-go-on, but that's how they make their living, so they can't just mope and not talk about running ...

I've backed it down to about 25-30 mpw for the time being. Just did 8.5 this afternoon, an absolutely beautiful spring day. I'm starting to remember what those things are that go up one side and then down the other ... :p

Here's the wild thing - my Garmin had been starting to act kind of flaky, and although it's been okay since I did a hard reset, I went ahead and took advantage of the trade-in deal they're having to move up to a 910XT, the one with the barometric altimeter. And I haven't done too much research on what people are saying about the algorithm, but it's been consistently giving me elevation gains DOUBLE what my old watch used to for the same routes. I knew I lived in the hills...

I'm sure you've all seen that the BAA is guaranteeing entry to the 2014 Marathon to those of us who weren't able to finish. I feel like I've got unfinished business and I really want to cross that line next April. But at the same time, it just seems indecent that I should get the do-over that I would've wanted anyway, because of what happened. :(

Anyone else running?

I've posted about this in another thread, the Murph is a Crossfit workout that was inspired by the military and named for Navy Lt. Micheal Murphy who fell in 2005. It's become the tradition to do this workout on Memorial Day weekend, and this year it was organized as a fundraiser. Today I and a team from my training group at my gym met with others at a local Crossfit gym to take on this 'hero' workout. It is a beast! It features the following:

1 mile run
300 squats
200 pushups (I did inclined pushups - shoulder issues)
100 pullups (I did TRX rows instead)
1 mile run

You can break up the three exercises as you wish, and most people do have SOME kind of modification, such as band assisted pullups. For those who can handle it a 20lb vest is added, most do not do that. A couple did but I wasn't one. Few are able to do the entire workout with no modifications - you don't have to be a SEAL to tackle this but it doesn't hurt :)

Much to my surprise, I completed the workout in 42:28, much better time than I thought since I am SO bad at running. Indeed I walked a good percentage of the first half-mile of the second run. I WAS going for a gentle ride this afternoon, but things are really tightening up so I think a nice gentle walk and stretching is called for instead. Riding tomorrow :)

Hi ladies,

It seems the women's racing scene is a bit fractured, particularly at the grassroots level. I'm trying to find ways to address this problem in my area. I'm hoping you might be willing to help me understand some of the issues?

Do you race? If so, how often/how do you find the community/what would make you race more often/who do you generally train with?

If you don't race, why not? Is there anything in terms of clinics, group rides, other touch points that would make you consider racing? Is there a divide between people who race/people who don't - do you do mixed group rides?

I'm definitely missing a lot of factors, but I'd love to engage in a discussion about all this stuff!

Hey all! Long time no see!

I'm still road riding and currently training to ride a century! Unfortunately, the Missouri weather has not been very helpful with my training goals but I don't plan to ride until sometime in August or September. I'm studying for PhD comprehensive exams in September and the training is allowing me to keep some of my sanity.

However, I've been lucky enough this year to find a group of female cyclists to do regular rides with. Many of them do some serious cross riding. They are extremely cool and encouraging and seem to think I should give it a shot - especially since I've wanted to try for several years now. But I am not even sure where to start! I feel like I will look like an idiot. These ladies have been so nice but I feel out of the loop. On road bikes, I am not a fish out of water but with a cross-bike... oye vay.

One of my profs is moving and needs to get rid of her MTB. So, as of now, it looks like I will be inheriting a very nice MTB. Her husband used to race MTB's professionally and says it will be workable for me. She is the same height as me and built very similarly so this bike will work for me for now, at least. The ladies I ride with say the MTB is a good place to start on our local cyclocross circuit. The bike currently is without pedals and tires. It needs some maintenance work, too, but I am always up to that challenge. I am going to keep the 26'' tires that are on it for now. I might make mods and put 700s on in the future if that's possible. The bike shop here told me that I have few options for good cross tires. Any suggestions? The ones they have seem to be feasible and in my price range (about $30.00-$40.00).

As for drops I don't have plans to put them on (for now). I know it's complicated and expensive and I figure if I like it enough, I will go out and buy a cross bike eventually. Probably when I graduate and have the money.

But pedals? Oh lordy! I've read through several threads and I still don't know what I'm doing. So. Many. Choices. I have Shimano 105's on my road bike currently but they are BAD NEWS for mud and muck. I have seen some people prefer eggbeaters but I don't think these are the best choice for me either. I have seen you guys rec BMX-type pedals. What would be good for starting out? I used to be the queen of falling over in my Shimanos (I still kinda hate them and may switch them out if I find something I like better) but I practically live on that bike now and clips don't worry me.

OY VEY! That kicks my butt! I have never consistently done any jumping/ plyometric kind of exercises. Let me say, there is a LOT of jumping going on in these sets. I have no idea how they expect people to do them 6 days a week (maybe it's my age). I'm hoping to do them 2 days a week with running and biking in between.
Has anyone else tried this? How did you do?

Hello Everyone,

Due to a divorce and a *drastic* drop in income I will be moving from a 1500 sq ft house w/oversize 1 car garage into a 662sq ft efficiency 1 bedroom apartment. I have thinned the herd down as low as I am prepared to go = 5 bikes that get ridden regularly and are all completely different purposes. There are bike racks in the garage, so theoretically I can lock up one or two outside the apartment, but that still leaves 3 to "decorate" with ;-) My question is, what solutions are there for storing multiple bikes in small apartments and still make them accessible? I'd love to see pics of creative solutions or just solutions in general.

Thanks so much!

All rides carry the disclaimer that they ride rain or shine but reserve the ride to cancel.

I have always viewed my road bike with its skinny tires as a fair weather ride, so here is what I am asking.

On a road bike, when is it, for you, too wet to ride?

I know mountain bikers ride in all sorts of weather but to me anything beyond a low level drizzle would be off putting to say the least. Which leads to how much rain gear does a road biker need?

So share your thoughts.

I had a really good mileage year in 2012 and assumed that 2013 would be much the same. Then my husband had to have open heart surgery and I haven't been on the bike for weeks. The year didn't start off well with crummy weather, required training on my days off for work, catching a terrible cold, overtime hours, and more. I have lost my base that I built on my trainer over the winter. The last time I went for a ride, I was so tense on the bike that I didn't enjoy myself. My familiar rhythm and confidence weren't there. Has anyone else had to quit riding for weeks/months to care for a family member? I worry that 2013 will be a lost year in terms of a level of fitness that I crave. I am still hiking with my golden, but it's nowhere near the workout of a 2 hour ride. Kudos to all those who are caring for family. And I hope you get some rest soon . . .

What is a good speed to go at for a beginner?
I completed the 6 miles in 30 minutes today. I wear a heart monitor to make sure I am keeping my heart rate up and boy it was up there. Said I was averaging 144 with 163 being the high. For an out of shape person I thought that was great!

I can't wait to increase my time on the bike but I don't want to get far away from home and run out of gas. Should I just increase my time on the bike by 5 minutes each day?? Which according to the time I just did that is increasing it by a mile each day. Or is that too much? But I am sure I will get faster so that is why I thought time of 5 minutes? IDK? I am new to this and want to enjoy my ride without over doing it. But wanna get up to a 2 hour ride each day. Just can't wait to get there!

I just bought this great Jamis Dakar mountain bike from Catrin (http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showt...203#post676203), but at the moment, I really won't be riding it off road much as we're house-sitting in Kansas City where there is lots of city pavement. We do plan to do some traveling where the knobby tires will be needed, but for now, what I'd really like to do is use it for urban/utility rides (like to the grocery store), as my Bike Friday is back in NC (just couldn't fit SIX bikes into our CR-V, though we did manage to get four into the back!) I do have a wonderful Trek Pilot road bike, but sometimes it's nice to be more upright, and my DH will be riding his MTB with slicks on these types of urban/utility rides.

So, I was thinking to get some slicks to put on it, but I wondered if it would be simpler (albeit more costly) to buy an inexpensive wheelset and change wheels when needed instead of tires?

I would think wheels would be a lot easier to change than tires (yuck!), but the bike has disk brakes, and the new rear wheel would need a 10-speed cogset, I assume, so we could be looking at quite a bit more money.

Has anyone been in this situation, and if so, what did you do? Advice/opinions appreciated!
