Had such a wonderful moment today that I just had to share.
Was ambling along on my bike, when I spy a guy behind me in my mirror.
He's breaking his neck to overtake, comes up beside me, completely refuses to acknowledge my existence, passes and looks behind with a smug grin on his face (not friendly, smug).
Testosterone posioning!
I carry on ambling along and about a kilometre further down the road come to an incline. Spy the guy in front of me, puffing and panting like a steam train and in no time at all, I'm sailing effortlessly past him as he struggles up the hill. I'm halfway back down again (hill repeats) as he's still chugging up.
Give him a big cheesy grin as I pass.
The look on his face was priceless! Guess the hill training is finally paying off!

I wouldn't normally be so mean, but revenge is just a little bit sweet! :D
I was so stoked I'd managed to overtake someone I was on a high all the way home!

I am personally horrified, shocked and offended. Testosterone poisoning isn't merely a condition, it's a disease and those afflicted should be treated with due respect and consideration.

And of course, when we overtake a woman, or a guy who hasn't done the smug smile thing, we handle it differently ... right? I think I did it right, once at least. I spun my way up a hill past a woman who was hauling a kid in a trailer plus a few more extra pounds than I carry. Instead of grinning to myself I called out how impressed I was by her, because I was having enough troubly hauling myself up that hill. She smiled and called back thanks for the encouragement. Now that's where I really feel we women are entitled to smile smugly back at guys with testosterone poisoning, and we don't even have to pass them to do it. Even us hill slugs can get the poison-free riding style right. ;)

I had a very similar experience... fellow passed me when I was lazing on the flat, "on your left!" and I went by him on the next hill...same (but laughing) utterance... I think I added, "I love this hill!~" and then I cut over to the bike path for my cool-down last mile and he came up beside me and asked, "just what kind of bike *is* that?" [and it was the 7500FX, which was novel then... not the Xtra :) and we had a nice conversation.
So, sometimes it's not poison - but he did have to slow down and wander down the path... a serious testosteritis case coudln't have done that...

Unless there's a reason to be mean - and even then - I just say 'hello', 'good morning', or something similar when I pass.

However I'm going out on a hills rep ride right now and I can tell you I won't say hello to every person I pass because that could take a while. Lots of cyclists around here...

DH and a girlfriend and me were cycling Monday and we went 40 miles with lots of hills. I was in the back. At one point a racer roadie guy in full garb splendor zoomed past us all, but he was very friendly and said "I knew I would find some others out on this fine day!" as he passed. Very nice guy. :)

Way to go Snappy! It's a good thing not all guys are like that or the social side of riding would be a real drag!

This weekend my friend and I were riding slowly up a big long hill, and two racer guys all kitted out in matching outfits came zooming up behind us, standing up this hill and chatting like it was nothing! So my friend says, in her cheerful friendly way, "Hey, here come some REAL cyclists!" as they passed us, and they both laughed and looked around behind then and said "Oh no, real cyclists?!? Where???" We were all chuckling, and soon they were gone over the top of the hill. It was a fun little exchange.

OMG - I simply LOVE it!

I would have given a pretty penny (or two) to get a glimpse of his expression. From the passing w/o so much as acknowledging your existence to you rocketing past him on the hill.

I passed a guy this past weekend on the big mountain climb locally and it was a big deal for me :D

Just proves- women are generally better hill climbers then men. BUT watch out on the downhills- because of their body mass they will generally overtake us no matter how hard we ride!

Keep it up, I too love passing the guys on hills! :p :p :p

I had the opposite happen last week, but it was also cool. At first a guy zooms passed me, but then starts slowing down and looking behind him. I thought he was looking for his riding companion(s) but he was encouraging me to catch up and ride along. Now, I am an old married lady, but attention from a very good looking guy on a bike is always a good thing (he was a hottie, older but very fit, italian, tall and thin). He had a nice custom ti seven, and we rode about 20 miles together. I knew he was stronger and could have ridden faster, but clearly he had decided that it would be more fun to ride with me, until I let it slip that my husband was ahead in the fast group of men, and then he took off too :( .

Triskeliongirl (what does that mean?) Good story- it does a girl's heart good to get a little unsolicited attention once in awhile! I was doing a 50 mile horse endurance ride a few years ago that also had an ultra marathon on the same trail at the same time. I leapfrogged with one guy for awhile, exchanging pleasantries and toward the end, he made an effort to catch up to me and asked me if I was married! I laughed and said yes, but thanks for asking. He said all the cute ones were married!!

After reading this, being a quite unmarried gal - I may need to move to the area :P

My handle refers to a molecule I study, called clathrin, that has the shape of a triskelion. My friend Lynette Chiang who works for Bike Friday rode with me to my lab one day on her Texas tour, and made this great movie about it.
