Bad Bike Dreams

This morning I woke up in the middle of a bad dream -- my bike had been stolen. This is the second time I've had a bad bike dream in recent memory.

A couple of months ago I had a dream that we were staying at a hotel before a triathlon and we had stored my bike in a secure area at the hotel before I could rack it for the tri. I had entrusted my husband to make sure that he took it to the right place, and watched him go while I did something else. The morning of the event, I was seeing people go off in the pool and went to pick up my bike, and she was gone!!! OH NO! So, I went to REI to get a new bike, and it was the big REI in downtown Seattle, but somehow it was transformed... we had to walk through the boiler room, the inventory, cross little streams of water and who knows what else, and still I could not find the bikes. I woke up at this point, we never did find the bikes.

Last night, I was in college again (at the University of Washington, which I really only attended during summers), and I had locked my bike up in this locker room area next to another bike (it was like there were areas just for bikes next to the lockers). I had a messenger bag on, unlocked my bike (with a locker combination I actually used in college!), then some guy came up and asked me if I had a business card so he could give it to a friend in Bellingham who was doing research on people commuting on their bikes. I went to rifle in my bag for my business cards (for the company I currently work with, post-college :p) and he stole my bike!!! I totally didn't even notice while the guy took my bike. I turned around and it was gone. Someone behind me said "that happens a lot here." I went out and tried to see where the guy went, couldn't find him or my bike. I remember thinking "how am I going to find a new one? I don't want to pay for it again and they probably don't even have my size in the same bike because it's the end of the season, so I'm going to have to get a new bike, what am I going to do!" and then I woke up.

Clearly my bike and I have a special relationship, if she can make it all the way through my subconscious and into my dreams -- I never had bad bike dreams before I got my new bike this year, ;)

Anyone else have bike dreams? I am hoping next time we actually do something fun, these dreams are no good!

I have lots of bike dreams - more when I was not riding and missing it so! They were nearly always good, though...riding along and loving it, but some were odd, with me walking my bike through various obstacles, etc. I figured since I was dreaming of riding so often, I really needed to get back to it to quiet my brain. I did, and I've stopped dreaming of biking so much...now I'm just living it! :)

Lately I've been dreaming that my Bike Friday showed up a couple of weeks early unexpected. Kind of a disappointment to wake up and realize I have to wait, but it will make the arrival that much sweeter:p :p

It's like dreaming it's Saturday, then finding out it's Thursday -- I hate it when that happens! ;)

Good to know I'm not the only bike dreamer. I look forward to good bike dreams like your guys' :)

Freud said that dreams are wish-fulfillment. But who can believe a guy who said that "sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar"? I mean, as if!;)

But, on a somewhat more serious note, I notice that I sometimes have dreams about things I'm worried about. Colby, sounds like you're very concerned about something bad happening to your bike. Can't say I blame you though--what would we do without our precious companions?

It's funny that things like buying a house, or a car, never caused these kinds of dreams, and you'd think those things would be pretty important. But my bike?! Now that's important!

Sometimes my dreams are metaphors for something that's going on... like if I dream I'm being chased, there is usually something going on in real life that makes me feel like I can't escape -- an endless project, a long travel series, those kinds of things. Maybe the bike loss means I'm afraid to lose something important to me? Or I feel like something's being taken away and I'm not ready for it?

Freud has to be wrong on this one -- no way would I want to lose my bike! ;)

That is weird. I actually had repeated dreams of taking my dremel tool out and engraving my name, etc into the bottom tube of my bike a few nights before my bike was nearly stolen (it'd been moved to the edge of the carport, but the guy was 'interrupted' by my GF yelling at him as he was in the back of her car trying to dismantle the subwoofer) so I took the initiative and actually did all the engraving after that... Don't have to tell me ...uh... multiple times. :rolleyes:

I dream about my bikes, too. Often fairly anxious dreams. None so far where my bike was stolen. That I remember, anyway.

(as I was falling asleep a couple nights ago the name for my new bike popped into my head. and the name is good. I guess that counts as a bike dream?)

I don't think I've ever dreamed about my bike. But a couple weeks ago I dreamed that my Swiss Army Knife was missing it's scissors. There was just a gap where the scissors were supposed to be.

Interesting, BT. Seems I wasn't far off in thinking maybe I'm being told I'm feeling like something is being taken away from me. I guess my "regular brain" just doesn't want to admit to it ;)

Probably a work thing. I spend so much of myself at work that I could be seeing some changes there that I'm observing but not observing at the same time, if that makes sense :p

I'm with you on that one! I think I use my swiss army knife scissors more than any other tool in the knife. Right now the spring is getting ready to fail, and I've got to order one before it does!!!

I've had bike dreams too. Not theft ones, although I have had a bike stolen--definitely no fun!

Okay, here's a weird kinda bike-related dream from last night.

My dad (who died last year) was in it, and I was showing him the backs of my hands and pointing out that because of wearing bike gloves, I would have fewer age spots later since the gloves protect my hands from the sun. I then realized that I still had a few age spots even where the gloves were and was disappointed to see those.

I guess it was an aging dream since that has been on my mind more lately (I'm 45 and still can't believe it since I feel like I should be 10 years younger - time is just going too fast!!), but I also thought it was kinda interesting that I was essentially telling my dad that I was still cycling and that it was helping with aging, to some degree.

When I woke up I coulda kicked myself because I have so seldom dreamed of my dad since he died and really yearn for those dreams. I thought "why didn't I tell him something more significant? Why didn't I really talk to him?" Kinda like an opportunity wasted, if that makes any sense.

Ok, so I read this thread last night, and I was going to reply, but then it was an effort to log in (I'm on travel and not using my normal computer), so I didn't. I was going to say that I had a couple of dreams about my bike being stolen from my garage. After about 3 of these in a row, I decided it was time to get some locks for the garage. (Our garage is detached, and for some reason some less desirable people find it amusing to walk up and down our alley). Once I got the locks, the dreams stopped. But then, after reading this thread last night, and looking at the winter glove selection here on TE, last night I dreamt I was riding my bike and I couldn't shift because my fingers were frozen and I didn't have any gloves. So now I'm thinking I definitely need to order some gloves! :p

So this doesn't mean to discount the alternative metaphorical interpretations, I have metaphorical dreams all of the time. But is there a legitimate reason you might be afraid of your bike being stolen?:confused:

since a crash a week ago, i've had a few dreams reliving the crash. doesn't take Freud to figure that one out. trying to revision it w more powerful imagery.

I read this the other day...and thought "I've never had a bike dream."
Then, last night, I was dreaming I was doing Bike D.C. with a friend of mine, who told me to go ahead, as she was going to be late. So I hooked up with these 2 guys and a woman whom I didn't know. We were following what we thought was the route, but it was going down stairs and up curbs and eventually ended up in a mall! We were riding our bikes through the mall, trying on berets and then we were down in among some offices and I saw a rest room. And I said, "Oh, wait, I need to use that." And then I woke up and....well, you can guess what I needed to do then! :p

Oh yeah - I've had bike dreams where I was riding down stairs (outside) and inside too! Didn't even recall them until you posted yours, Regina! Gotta wonder what they mean.... :confused:

Well duh! Obviously your subconscious was telling you you needed to take up mountain biking because you can actually do cool stuff like that on a mtb! :D I'm glad you listened. :)

I have a really nice mountain bike sitting in the utility room, gathering dust. Except for one ride around the block the other week, it hasn't been out in over a year (SHAME!!!). :eek:
Maybe it doesn't like the fact that the air is slowly leaking from its tires and suspensions (it's a dualie) and is sending me vibes to get back on the dirt!
