First off congrats to all the other tri girls that raced this weekend. Esp. those first timers!! WHOO HOO!! I'm happy for you!!!
I decided to race at the last minute (thursday) and did the Imperial Beach Sprint south of San Diego. (.31/ 9/ 3.1)
It was a DISASTER!!! I really did almost drown on the swim as I got caught in a wave and was thrashed pretty bad. I seriously almost swam back to shore, but Tracy (tprevost) had brought the kids down and all, so I HAD to keep going! :o
The water was also FREEZING cold and after the thrashing I couldn't get my breath, so I had to swim with my head out of the water the entire time. You know it's bad when you hear the lifeguard yell to someone "hey I'm gonna follow her and make sure she's ok"... UGH!!
The bike went well. It was a half mile long according to my gps. But I know I averaged just over 17 mph. Good for me.
The run was going ok, but I ran into a girl who said it was her first race and she didn't think she would finish it. Well I couldn't have that. So I ran walked with her and got her through it. A guy named Jose joined up with us, it was his first time too. He said he really doesn't know how to swim!! But his buddy talked him into it!! YIPES!!!
I could have run the entire thing, but this race wasn't really important to me, so I figured I would treat the run as a social hour and plod along with my new friend "Amy".
So anyway, I finished but like I said... the swim was a DISASTER! No splits yet, but I did it in 1:38 which is 10 minutes slower than Solana beach.. UGH!!

But as a post scrip, on the way home I started feeling a sore throat coming on, and then that general "I'm gettin sick" malaise took over... Achy joints, headache, sore throat, feeling like I want to die... UGH! It was a LOOONNGG 5 hour drive home!! :(

I took some tylenol and went straight to bed when I got home, but I'm up now and feeling a bit better.

Anyhoo, that's it. I'll post a few pics on my photobucket site when I have time.
Again, congrats on all the other races y'all did this weekend.
And a BIG HEARTY THANKS to Tracy for getting up early and dragging the chitlins out of bed for the 1.5 hour drive to see silly old me make a fool of myself!!!
Ya'll have a good week, I'm going back to bed!
Denise
OH- another post script.... I ran into my old running coach that I had fired back in 04. He still owes me 1k (yes that is THOUSAND) worth of coaching, so I may have him write me up some workouts and recoup some of the $$ lost when I blew up at him and told him to **** off...
I guess time heals all wounds because we had a nice chat, and you would have never known there was ill will between us.
ok, to bed....

Maybe you were meant to race... so you could be her angle for the day?

Swim sounds brutal! Great job on getting through it. Bike sounds solid! Run... well... you were where you were suppose to be... at just the right moment.

Gawd, that sounds awful, Denise, but I'll bet Amy and Jose remember you with fondness and gratitude forever. Maybe you were meant to be their "angel". I can just hear it, "...and she's an Ironman and everything, but she stuck with us for the whole run part!"

Hope you don't get any sicker, and that you recover some value from that old running coach. Sounds like you've opened the door, at least.

And yeah, that Tracey seems like quite a friend! :D

Sleep tight.

Excellent work, RM, even if it was not a personal best ;)

Everyone is an inspiration to someone, and even if that was the only good to come from this race, it was more than enough to make it worth it. Just don't look at your times, right? :D

Thanks girls.
feeling a bit better today, but still nursing some ailment. UGH! So I'm on the zicam super highway, and drinking my peppermint tea..

And yeah, it wasn't ALL bad. I got to see Tracy which was super cool!! She's just the coolest! :)
And I did help a newbie realize her dream. She wasn't doing so good, so I tried to keep her mind off of the matters at hand.

Well, I suppose I should do some work... I hate work... :p

Ciao!

Yep - forget about your times. You can't always have a PB. :) Some days you're just off. If you hadn't had a yucky swim, you might not have run into Amy and Jose.

REVEL in knowing you helped some folks achieve their dream. That's way cool!

sorry the swim was such a bummer. I must say, though, you are the ideal of what a triathlete is supposed to be, of what this sport is supposed to be. What you did for that girl was awesome.

Imagine who Amy will go on to help and encourage, because you did so with her. It's part of why I love triathlon so much.

I'm sorry to hear you were feeling under the weather, hopefully you caught it early and it will not get any worse :o I am really looking forward to the next one!!! (AND, its looking pretty good for the ride ;) )

Ahh COOL!! The tour de farm!! And I just saw today that there is also going to be a hot air balloon festival at the airport that weekend, so we should be treated to balloons lifting off as we head out. The airport is a hop skip and a jump from the ride start/finish. :)
