View Full Version : Lets see you on your bike!

Seeing Kitsune's pic got me thinking about starting up a thread to see everyone. Normally don't really like having my photo taken, but for some reason I love to see photos of myself on the bike (hope this doesn't sound vain....)

these are some of my favorites:

This is at Six Gap last year. The only event photo I've come even _close_ to not looking hideous in. Probably because this followed an 11 mile downhill.

Hmmm, I'm a shutterbug and yeah, Hammer's photo is cool. Methinks the lens was being manually zoomed while the picture was taken. It is actually easy to do - getting it right is another story. Hammer though, definitely got it right :)

This is from my first real event this past Saturday (obviously before the ride). At one point, my bf and I got lost (bad cue sheet directions). I stopped and had my left foot unclipped and on the ground, my right foot still clipped in. I turned my body around to the left, to ask bf - which way? and I started to lean to the right. Of course, still being new to clipless, I just panicked and fell completely over to the right.
Long story short, the "topple" left an 8 inch scratch on my left forearm - still can't figure out how.
Bf said if I wanted, we could come up with a better story about how it happened (as opposed to, "I just...fell over"). Ah...battle scars.
I haven't been successful at submitting pics thus far. Let's see if this works.

tiffanie.. yep! That's Ocotillo... in the Anza Borrego desert... and this was hands down the hardest century I've ever ridden. The first 50 miles to lunch are all a 2% climb... with a couple of 14% hills thrown in, just in case your not hurting enough...

the REAL problem tho was the wind... it was a head wind the entire climb... with gusts up to 50mph. It was actually scary... and many, many people turned back. By the time we got to lunch we had 10 minuted left before they were shutting it down... us and everyone else who'd just arrived!  took us just over 4 hours to do the 50 miles...

THEN you turn around... tailwind and downhill... there were 5 mile stretches where we'd be doing 30mph and not pedaling once! THIS pic was on the way back! LOL ;)

The first one is me winning 26 miles Tour De Phoenix among women. I am very proud of it since it was my first ever race. That's why I have a very goofy smile on my face.
The other two are with my husband. Trek Honeymoon in the wine country.

Both, I am only 5'6 and 113 pounds, while my hubby is 6'6 ! I am glad that he is rather skinny for his hight. Imagine what kind of baby we are going to have. Poor me. :p

No testosterone, but I guess I have plenty of estrogen. Maybe it helps too.

Hammer, your photo is really cool! how did you get that effect?

Thanks!

I duplicated the photo, put a radial blur on the top layer and then erased the portions that I wanted to stay in focus. I did it in photoshop.

So, no... I'm sorry to say it wasn't a manual zoom. Though, I do enjoy doing that effect. However, I haven't been very successful doing the pan while taking a longer exposure picture, so doing both at the same time could be tricky. And also, I wasn't taking this photo of myself... so I would have another skill I'd have to master at the same time. :D To be fair, I do tend to prefer images made inside of the camera, though sometimes you do have to cheat and digitally manipulate a photo on the computer to make it a little more interesting.

Let's see, me on my bike... the photos are a bit of a challenge since I usually ride alone, but hey - I want to play too!

This first shot is an old one, from my cross country trip in 2002. As I was absorbing the amazing scenery in the Grand Tetons, I spent some time talking with another traveler who was also drawn in by the views. We traded cameras so we could each get a picture of ourselves: http://denise.smugmug.com/photos/44146-M-1.jpg

This one was courtesy of reflective glass on a very bright day in June as my bike and I were wandering near home: http://denise.smugmug.com/photos/74793251-M-1.jpg

I've tried for weeks now to remember mine as we have acres and acres of sunflower fields around here. They all are in bloom at the same time the TdF is running. Really gorgeous photo ops. Yawl will just have to imagine it.

Actually, I had a reason for having it with me today. Someone from Halifax, NS posted on crazyguyonabike earlier this week looking for pictures of cycling road signs from around the world. He is working on a fundraiser to get better cycling facilities in Halifax and needs photos. There are a couple of interesting signs here I wanted to get for him.

If anyone has some interesting cycling signs for Peter... here's a link to the discussion: http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/forum/board/message/?message_id=35043

And SadieKate - if you get any photos of the sunflowers, I'd love to see them. I find them fascinating. Here's one in someone's garden that is just starting to open: http://denise.smugmug.com/photos/86328069-M-1.jpg (and yes, of course I had a camera with me when I was wandering on my bike on Sunday!)

Wow, that's beautiful. The fields are all drying now so the colors are muted and even turning brown. The heads are drooping and turned away from the sun. Even the safflower fields are turning to amber. Eh, cameras just don't seem to find their way into my jersey pockets on my road bike.

No pictures of me on the bike yet. I'm usually the one taking pictures.
They call Bianchi aqua color celeste. I found a cheap alternative to an almost Celeste colored jersey at of all places, Wal-Mart. It is a Danskin sleeveless tank. It has reflective piping down the sides and a zipper pocket in the back big enough for a bar or two and a cell phone. It is made out of a sweat wicking fabric. All for the grand price of $9.63. Actually the one I bought was on sale for $7.00. I don’t shop much at Wal-Mart, but I thought this was quite a find! ;)

Hey theav - I have never ridden on a bike path before so it will be a little different. Do others use the bike paths (roller bladers , walkers etc)?
Do many riders just use the road?? This is not illegal in Aust is it?? I know some of the girls here in the USA have mentioned that in their states if there is a bike path you have to use.

Yep, walkers, rollerbladers... lots of people use the bike paths, but it isnt really a problem. They are quite wide with a centre line, and people here are pretty courteous. Only problem i've found is at night, some people wear black and you come up on them pretty quickly. Some reflective strips wouldnt go astray! But during the day i've never had a problem.

Yes, you can ride on the road, and we have great on-road cycling here too. Sound like an ad, dont i? but we do:D in the last 3 years or so, they have added bike lanes to the majority of major roads, so if you're a roadie, you'll love it. I go on the roads sometimes, but i'm not particularly quick and just find the bike paths as convenient. Some of my more serious cycling buddies stick to the roads. I tell you Canberra is a cycling heaven... apart from the -6 degree mornings in winter :p ... but even those are bearable, cos they usually develop into beautiful sunny days just like today!

Cool Schwinn! I like the cherry red bar tape!

I loved the contrasting bar tape, also. Unfortunately, whoever wrapped it did a crappy job. After the first few rides it started to unwind. DH talked me into getting the red and black marbled tape, he thought it would look good, but I like the solid red better. Oh well, handlebar tape is cheap...hehe...next time I'll get red. At least he's a better handlebar-tape-wrapper than whoever did it at Schwinn!

Your biggest challenge isn't someone else.
It's the ache in your lungs and the burning in your legs and the voice inside that yells "CAN'T".
But you don't listen. You just push harder.
And then you hear the voice whisper "CAN".
And you discover that the person you thought you were is no match for the one you really are.

Not my bike though. :) It was a rental. Dh and I biked around Napa County this weekend while we were vacationing there. The area was so beautiful!!!

Did you bring your pedals and have the rental joint put them on for you? My hubby and I brought our bikes out on our trip to British Columbia earlier this summer, but between the bike box rental, the flight charge, and 2 days of "delayed" baggage (1 day each side), not to mention the dent my poor Pilot had to suffer (it's cosmetic but still, I was bummed ya know), I can't help but think renting would have been easier and probably cheaper. The problem is how do you find places that rent good quality bikes?

The bike rental shop provided the pedals. We brought our own shoes/cleats. They were very accommodating and reasonable! Two bikes for 24 hours, delivered and picked up at our B&B only cost us $100. The ride was kind of challenging, not having my own bike, different fit, feel, etc. but since we only planned one ride over the weekend, it was do-able.

Sorry about the bang up on your bike. :(

We were in the Vancouver area along Howe Sound. We rode around Squamish and also inland around Pemberton. And walked around Whistler (lots of pedestrians and didn't have the time to find the lesser traveled areas). The bike paths around Whistler looked very idea for hybrid type bikes though, and it's nice to see you could really get around that way. Absolutely beautiful there.

Speaking of meeting in the middle/Idaho....

I was working at the Western Idaho Fair today, when a nice looking young man wearing a RAGBRAI shirt walked by. I said, hey! That's a famous bike ride across Iowa. And he said yes, been going on for 27 years (I think his said XXV on it, so it's been a couple of years for him). He also said that he's ridden from somewhere in Alaska to Boise, on his mountain bike -- 3500 miles. I was impressed! 3500 miles for one trip sounds a bit loony, but still, impressive!

Hi Girls,
its strange because of the file format (.gif) ... a .gif file is a suitable file format for the web for illustrations and images that contain flat areas of colour and also for animations. The other web file format is .jpg which is the way to go for continuous tone images or photos. .GIF is indexed colour, when you resize an indexed colour image it degrades in quality. If you need to resize a indexed colour image, convert it to RGB colour mode first, then back to index when finished. But for photos, definitely stick to .jpg

rocknrollgirl
08-20-2006, 02:19 AM

I sorta have some idea what that means. I do not know how to do that conversion, but that is for another thread LOL. I wonder if the photographer uses that format on purpose. They probably do not want us to scan the pictures after we purchase them, because then you could reprint. They charge an arm and a leg for the pictures.

Since we are on the picture topic. How do you get it show up in the body of the response and not as an attachment?

It was rainy that day, plus, my feet were already wet before the ride because the parking lot (field) was a sodden mess. Water was squishing up through my cleats. when it's a parcel, it's too big for the postie, so the man in the white van delivers it. From my home office window I can see the traffic coming into our quiet street. When I see the postie van come into the street, I just sit there eyes glued to see if he's gonna come down my driveway (I've usually got something on order from somewhere in the world waiting to be delivered...)... I just get excited every time I see his van....

BTW, your bike is sweet. :)

The jersey fits well in the size I chose for me (3X). The sleeves are non-binding and as you can see the rest gives me a loose but not baggy coverage of my, ahm, generous self. :) There isn't elastic in the hem but it glides smoothly over my rear assets and doesn't ride up. It has a more feminine cut (slightly princess?) that I think would be flattering to many body types. I don't know if that helps you or not as so much of fit is subjective to our own tastes and foibles.:D

Hey guys, way way up, the second or third post in this thread i am wearing that other sheebeest jersey, the one with orange and the daisies. I like it a lot!

I noticed it in your pictures. If the plus sized one came with orange sleeves instead of yellow - it'd be here already! :)

Patty, what is that bike anyway? It looks great. Is it a hybrid?

They call it a commuter bike. She's a 2006 Novara Fusion (WSD). She came fully loaded (bell, rack, disc brakes, one dyno light, one battery light, internal hub gear), has slightly curved flat handlebars with a cross piece and she's not light. Probably around 30 lbs. For commuting I usually have a handlebar bag and a trunk back on her (as in the above pictures). For errands, I add a pair of grocery panniers and for leisure just go the the handlebar bag and the underseat toolbag. In all 3 set ups she handles well. The tires are 700cc with the front tire width being a 35 and the rear being a 37.

And the dynohub too. You don't even waste batteries

She's got both a battery headlight and the dynohub light. I use rechargeables in the battery light. Besides being pro recharagable batteries for environmental reasons, I'd go broke buying them because I have yet to consistently remember to turn the light off when I do use it. :o I rode most of the summer with just the dynolight and have just broken down and put batteries in the other now that it's getting light later.

Thanks again for all the nice things everyone posted!

tiffanie..

LOL ;)

How did I not see this post before. I can't believe I signed up for this ride!!!

I can't find any pics of me where you can see my bike too - maybe I have some on my computer at home, but none on my work computer, so this will have to do. I think I'd posted an older shot much earlier in this thread...but here is a more recent one. This is my current bike taken in August. DH took this while riding next to me (and with a disposable camera), so it's a bit off center! (excuse the thumb!)

Here's me on the right! with friend Kristin Roo. Photo taken by friend Kristin West when they came out to ride with me on the tour I took this fall.

Location is in North Central Oregon, somewhere near to Condon, OR. Note both the wind farm in the background, AND the sign indicating a steep grade. That day, we started in the John Day River canyon, so it was a day full of steep grades, mild headwinds, and not much shade. :D :D

I don't have many pictures on my work computer (and don't spend much time on the home computer), but here are a couple ...

FINALLY- I have pictures of me on my bike.
The first is one during my IM, and the other one is DH and I on a club ride last month.

Thanks, Jennifer? You can have my legs- I don't love the way they look (but for the life of me and all the working out I do, they never change or lean up). They are powerful, but are the shortest and chubbiest part of me. Funny how we see ourselves so differently than others. I love the Nike campaign that had the ad for "thunder thighs" and how proud we should be of them. I should embrace my thunderness.... :)

I too like the Nike ads. We are our own harshest critics. Your legs look lovely and powerful to me. It is amazing to me how much my body changed from what it used to be. Now I am stronger and older (so things have shifted  ) and no matter what I do, I have a "bubble" butt. Running just makes it worse. :p I guess I should embrace my curviness?

YESSSSSSSSSS!

(And just ask your DH what he'd think of you with a flat butt!!!)

Trigirl: your legs are awesome!!!

Enjoy your bodies ladies. They will take you even further...
