View Full Version : What to do week prior to Century?

I usually take 2 spinning classes during the week in addition to swimming twice a week and 2 weight sessions. Should I not do any spinning during the week of my first century. I usually feel just a little sore one day after the class, nothing major. Should I still do it?

i don't see why you shouldn't do your spinning classes, just take it easy.
before my almost double century last weekend I rode three 10 mile days during the week, and we did a couple tough but short (25 and 40) rides the weekend before.

I prefer light exercise to complete rest the week before a century. Personally, I would not do weight training because I want my legs to be fresh. I think a couple of easy spin classes is fine. I like to rest up the two days prior.

My first century is this weekend and while I'm obviously not an expert (yet!) this is my plan. We planned to ride two shorter easy rides over the past weekend (one was 30 miles and the other one got rained out!). I also planned to commute two days this week which I am doing today and tomorrow (my commute is 14 miles). If I could have gotten in my weight training on Monday or Tuesday, I would still have done at least one session, but I ended up working late those days. I'm not going to try to 'make it up' and I'll just chalk it up to more 'rest'.
Friday will be a day of rest, and then Saturday is the big day!
(I think I've gotten extra calorie burn in just because I am constantly checking the weather! *click* *click* *click*...I'm obsessed! :p )

Should I still do it?Soreness is a sign that your muscles have been worked hard and (somebody correct me here if I'm wrong) that the muscles have micro-tears. The only way to rebuild and recover is rest. If they are sore after every class, the exercise is very intense and that is exactly what you don't want to do the week before. Light exercise to stay loose if fine but intense to the point of soreness is not.
Rest and recovery is equally as important as the exercise.
